Midwestern State wipes out WNMU, 7-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State remained undefeated in Lone Star Conference duals and swept past Western New Mexico, 7-0, on a windy Friday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center. MSU is 10-7 overall with a 3-0 record against conference opponents. WNMU falls to 5-7 overall with a 2-4 record in the conference.

Charles Heffernan clinched the dual-match victory for the Mustangs by defeating Lachlan Rowing in the No. 2 singles match, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Heffernan has won three of his last four matches and is undefeated against LSC opponents this season. The senior from Australia is now 6-4 in the No. 2 slot for Midwestern State.

Luis Diaz Argente won his second consecutive match and improved to 8-8 overall this season with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Patricio Larrea in the No. 1 singles match. It was the fourth time this season that Diaz won the opening set at love. Diaz has started at No. 1 singles in 12 consecutive duals and is 5-6 in that position for MSU.

Marcal Miret Avante chalked up his fifth straight win in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Yu-Jhe Du. Miret is 11-5 overall this season and improved to 7-5 in the No. 3 position for the Mustangs. Miret is undefeated in three matches against LSC opponents.

Killian Guillou remains undefeated for MSU, but he was extended to a third set for the first time this season by Javier Romero. Guillou prevailed, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, and improved to 2-0 in the No. 4 position. The freshman from Paris is 8-0 in singles this year with three wins over conference foes.

Philip Kamara made his first appearance since Feb. 10 and defeated Paul Claussen at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Kamara is 2-0 this season.

Germano Setti played the longest match of the day but pulled out a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 victory in the No. 5 position. Setti was coming off a three-set victory at Lubbock Christian, where he fought off two match points before defeating Nikita Deev. Setti withstood the power of Brendan Lock and improved to 11-6 for the season.

Midwestern State won the doubles point, led by Diaz and Stephen Slocombe, who won No. 2 doubles routinely, 6-2.  Heffernan and Guillou are 4-3 this season following a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Miret and Setti fell 6-3 in No. 1 doubles.
