LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 27-ranked Midwestern State (8-7) returns to the court to play in a dual-match for the first time since facing Biola in La Miranda, California, on St. Patrick's Day. The Mustangs are on the road for a Lone Star Conference clash with Lubbock Christian (5-4). First serve at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center is Tuesday at noon.
Midwestern State is 3-0 in the all-time series with the Chaparrals, but the last encounter was in 1982. This is the first season of Lone Star Conference and NCAA competition for Lubbock Christian, which competed in the NAIA before disbanding the program following the 1981-82 school year.
The Mustangs were 1-3 on the Spring Break road trip to California. Azusa Pacific defeated MSU, 4-0, and Hawaii-Hilo scored a 4-1 victory. The highlight of the trip was 7-0 victory over Fresno Pacific before Biola pulled out a 4-3 victory.
Midwestern State opened conference play with a 6-1 victory over St. Mary's on Feb. 25 and is playing the first of seven remaining LSC duals.
Luis Diaz Argente has played No. 1 singles in the last 10 dual matches for the Mustangs and has posted wins over Fresno Pacific, Southwest Baptist and Collin College. Diaz is 6-8 in singles overall, including a 3-2 record in the No. 2 position. Diaz has lost twice to nationally-ranked opponents and is 1-3 against regionally-ranked foes.
Killian Guillou has opened the season 6-0 in singles, including a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ilyes Khelifi of Southwest Baptist in his last completed match. Guillou earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jake Faryniarz in the conference opener against St. Mary's.
Marcal Miret Avante has reeled off three straight victories for MSU. Miret posted straight-set wins against Hawaii-Hilo and Fresno Pacific at No. 3 singles before outlasting Sebastian Herrera, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) in the No. 2 position to close out the California trip. Miret is 9-5 in singles overall — 5-5 in the No. 3 slot.
Charles Heffernan is 5-8 in singles but four losses have come against nationally-ranked opponents. Each of his last two matches have gone the distance. Heffernan defeated Brodie Sodersten of Fresno Pacific in a third-set tiebreak, 10-4, and fell to Adrian Solorzana of Biola, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-6. The senior from Australia posted a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Daniel Baldor of St. Mary's in the only LSC dual.
Germano Setti has won six of his last nine singles matches and is 7-4 in the No. 4 position this season. Setti had a five-match winning streak snapped in California but defeated Joshua Wong of Fresno Pacific, 6-4, 6-3. The freshman made his conference debut in the No. 4 spot and outlasted Oskar Irdoja of St. Mary's, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
Stephen Slocombe won his two matches at the No. 6 position during the California road trip, and the Mustangs remain undefeated at No. 6 singles with an 8-0 record. Slocombe has not dropped a set in his three singles matches this season, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tyson Cowger of Augustana (S.D.) on Feb. 4.
Lubbock Christian is undefeated at home this season with wins over Seward County, McMurry and St. Mary's.
The Chaps won their inaugural LSC dual match over St. Mary's, 4-3. LCU took the doubles point to start the day at Penny Gullo Tennis Center. Kelly Giese, Herman Aguirre and Nikita Deev earned points at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles respectively.
LCU split four dual matches during its Spring Break road trip. The Chaps lost to Newman and Rockhurst but defeated Emporia State and William Jewell College.
Martins Abamu, a senior from Nigeria, posted four straight wins at No. 1 singles and is 5-2 this season, but lost his only conference match against Alvaro Soler of St. Mary's, 6-7, 6-0, 2-6. Abamu is ranked No. 13 in the national rankings.
Aguirre saw a seven-match winning streak end with a 6-0, 2-6, 3-6 loss to Semyon Tsyrenov of Rockhurst. Aguirre lost to Diaz of MSU in the quarterfinals of the ITA Division II Men's Tennis South Central Regional Championship in the fall, 1-6, 4-6.
Deev is 5-2 in singles for the Chaps but has lost two of his last three matches, including 3-6, 0-6 loss to Juan Felipe Castellano of Rockhurst in his last outing. Deev defeated Jake Faryniarz of St. Mary's, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Giese has a three-match winning streak and has won five of his last eight singles matches following a 7-5, 6-0 win over Josef Truhlar of Rockhurst. Giese has played No. 2 singles in the last four duals after starting 2-2 at No. 1 singles.
Giese has won four of his last five doubles matches with Braden Tipton, including three straight wins at the No. 1 position.
The Chaps are a combined 27-23 among the 11 players that have appeared in doubles matches this season.
Midwestern State is home on Friday to face Western New Mexico at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
