Azusa Pacific ends Midwestern State winning streak

AZUSA, Calif. -- Midwestern State's six-dual winning streak came to an end in the Mustangs' first of four duals in California. No. 14-ranked Azusa Pacific defeated No. 20-ranked Midwestern State, 4-0, Monday afternoon at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.

The dual was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday but was moved up due to rain in the weather forecast.

Emilija Visic and Skylar Minns improved to 3-0 in doubles. The duo prevailed in the No. 3 position with a 6-2 triumph over April Wong and Katia Betancourt, but the Cougars managed to take the doubles point.

No. 4-ranked Eleonora Liga and Madison Kang of Azusa Pacific upended 24th-ranked Amelia Lawson and Sydney Williams in the No. 1 position, 6-2. Miruna Tudor teamed with Kylie Hull to defeat the Mustangs' pairing of Alice Di Matteo and Kanaha Furutani, 6-4.

Liga, who is No. 4 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings, defeated Lawson in No. 1 singles to clinch the dual victory for the Cougars. Liga prevailed, 6-4, 6-4.

Madison Kane earned the victory in the No. 2 position with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over sophomore Hannah Yip of Midwestern State.

Vini Bautista of Azusa Pacific was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Visic at No. 4 singles.

Midwestern State is tentatively scheduled to play Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. central time. Inclement weather could force the dual to be moved to the Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, California. If the venue is changed the first serve would be at 5 p.m. central time.
