No. 10 Mustangs in California for clash with Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. -- No. 10-ranked Midwestern State will play its first of four duals in California against 33rd-ranked Azusa Pacific at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex on Monday at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs had a three-dual winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to No. 9-ranked Ouachita Baptist at the MSU Tennis Center on March 4. MSU is 0-1 on the road this season with a 4-0 loss to Tyler JC on Feb. 17.

Killian Guillou has opened the campaign with six consecutive victories in singles for the Mustangs, winning five matches at the No. 6 position and also scoring a victory at No. 4 singles, where Midwestern State is 10-1 as a team.

Germano Setti is 6-1 at No. 4 singles and extended his winning streak to five matches with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Ramon Strassman of Ouchita Baptist. Setti is 2-2 at No. 3 singles.

Marcal Miret Avante is 6-4 in singles overall, winning his only match in the No. 5 position and winning twice in the No. 4 spot. Miret is 3-4 at No. 3 singles.

MSU is 6-4 at No. 2 singles this season with Luis Diaz Argente and Charles Heffernan both posting 3-2 records. Diaz is 2-4 at No. 1 singles and Heffernan is 1-3 in the No. 1 position for the Mustangs.

Juan David Duque is 4-2 in singles for the Mustangs and has won his last two completed matches. He is 3-2 at No. 5 singles and won his only match in the No. 4 position.

Duque and Diaz Argente are 6-4 in doubles for Midwestern State, which is 19-13 in doubles matches this season.

Heffernan has won his last four doubles matches, including the last three with Guillou, who is 6-3 in doubles.

Miret Avante has won three of his last five doubles matches and is 6-5 for the season.

Azusa Pacific is 7-0 at home this season following a 4-1 victory over Emory, which is ranked No. 10 in Division III. The Cougars have a three-dual winning streak.

The Cougars are 23-8 in doubles, led by the pairing of Leyton Bohren and Marko Nikoliuk, who are 10-2 at No. 1 doubles. Bohren and Nikoliuk are ranked No. 15 in the nation and have a six-match winning streak.

Brody Bohren and Vili Bonev are 6-1 at No. 3 doubles this season. Cole Rassner is 3-0 overall in doubles following a 7-5 victory — paired with Brody Bohren — in the No. 2 position against Emory on Thursday. Rassner won twice with Elias Emilio Walter in the No. 3 spot.

Nikoliuk is 9-3 in singles overall, including two wins in the No. 1 position. Nikoliuk, who is ranked No. 24 in the nation, is 5-2 at No. 2 singles.

Leyton Bohren is ranked 39th in the nation in singles and has won his last two matches, snapping a six-match losing streak. He is 1-7 in the No. 1 position, where the Cougars are 3-8 as a team.

Walter has a five-match winning streak in singles. He is 8-3 in singles overall and boasts a 6-1 record in the No. 3 position.

Midwestern State is 0-2 in the all-time series, suffering a 7-2 loss to the Cougars in 2018, when they met in Las Vegas. The Mustangs traveled to Azusa in 2011 and lost, 6-3.

Midwestern State is tentatively scheduled to play Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. central time. Inclement weather could force the dual to be moved to the Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, California. If the venue is changed the first serve would be at 5 p.m. central time.
