AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 33, upended No. 10 Midwestern State, 4-0, as the Mustangs began their four-dual trip to California on Monday.
The dual was originally scheduled to be played at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex on Tuesday but was moved up due to rain in the weather forecast.
Luis Diaz Argente and
Juan David Duque improved to 8-4 in doubles this season with a 6-3 victory over Brody Bohren and Cole Rassner at the No. 2 position, but the Cougars won the doubles point.
Leyton Bohren and Marko Nikoliuk finished No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 win over
Marcal Miret Avante and
Germano Setti.
Elias Emilio Walter and Vili Boney secured the first point by defeating
Charles Heffernan and
Killian Guillou at No. 3 doubles, 6-3.
Walter gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Miret Avante in the No. 3 singles position.
Miha Valecki of Azusa Pacific ended Setti's five-match winning streak in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.
Heffernan rallied to win the second set 6-2 after dropping the first set 6-0, but Leyton Bohren won the decisive third set 6-3 and clinched the victory for Azusa Pacific.
Midwestern State is tentatively scheduled to play Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. central time. Inclement weather could force the dual to be moved to the Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, California. If the venue is changed the first serve would be at 5 p.m. central time.
