THE LEAD >>>
WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Pierre Sanders erupted for 25 points and dished out five assists to lead the Mustangs to a 65-59 win over UT Permian Basin Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The win pulled the Mustangs within a half-game out of the eighth and final berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament with four games to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED >>>
Midwestern State's duo of
Pierre Sanders and
Jermane Carter logged season highs in minutes played with 38 and 36, respectively.
Senior
Derrick Ogechi also battled for 32 minutes, while fellow starter

The group had plenty in the tank with a little help from fellow senior
Luke Hamilton.
Sanders penetrated to score back-to-back buckets in the paint to stake MSU to a 46-44 lead with 8:14 to play before Hamilton splashed in consecutive 3-pointers to extend 10-0 run to give the Mustangs a 52-44 advantage.
UT Permian Basin responded with a 10-2 spurt of its own to pull even at 54-54 with 3:23 to play.
But Ogechi buried a 3-pointer from the left wing, then hit a pull-up jumper in the paint before Sanders set up Davison for a dunk to give the Mustangs a 61-56 edge.
UTPB junior Daniel Moody answered with a 3-pointer from the left wing to get the Falcons back to within 61-59 with 24 seconds to play.
But Sanders put the game away by making four consecutive free throws in the closing seconds.
