Mustangs meet Northwest Missouri before hosting Southeastern Oklahoma

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State looks to remain undefeated as it meets No. 15 Northwest Missouri at the Lifetime Tennis Center in Edmond, Oklahoma, on Friday. The Mustangs welcome Southeastern Oklahoma to the MSU Tennis Center for the home opener on Saturday.

Midwestern State opened its season with three wins in Kearney, Nebraska. A 7-0 win over Newman was followed by a 4-3 victory over MSU Denver, and the Mustangs closed out the weekend with a 6-1 triumph over Augustana (S.D.).

Killian Guillou is 3-0 to start the campaign. Guillou won at No. 6 singles against Newman and MSU Denver before defeating Meg Siritaworachan of Augustana at No. 4 singles.

Guillou also paired with Stephen Slocombe to win No. 3 doubles against Augustana, 6-4.

Juan David Duque and Marcal Mirel Avante have both opened the season 2-0 in singles.

Charles Heffernan played No. 1 singles in all three matches last week and was 1-2, defeating Ali Mounir of Newman, 6-3, 6-4. Heffernan and Slocombe were 1-1 in doubles last week, scoring a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles against MSU Denver.

Luis Diaz Agente is 2-1 at No. 2 singles, and Germano Setti is 2-1 at No. 3 singles.

Setti and Avante were 2-1 at No. 1 doubles in Kearney, and Midwestern State was 3-0 at No. 3 doubles.
The Mustangs are 14-4 in singles and 6-3 in doubles matches after three duals.

Northwest Missouri is opening its season with matches against the Mustangs and UT Tyler in Edmond. Midwestern State will tangle with the Bearcats on Friday at 5 p.m.

Northwest Missouri, ranked No. 15 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association men's tennis rankings of 2023, is the preseason favorite in the MIAA/GAC according to the Men's Tennis Coaches Poll.

Mark Rosewell is in his 39th season as the men's and women's tennis coach at Northwest Missouri and has posted 1,193 career dual victories. The Bearcats have captured 27 MIAA regular season titles and appeared in 41 NCAA Tournaments under Rosewell, who is a seven-time ITA Regional Coach of the Year.

Andrea Zamurri leads the Bearcats. The junior was named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Year last spring. Zamurri has a career singles record of 45-11 at Northwest Missouri.

Senior Fabien Calloud earned first-team all-MIAA/GAC honors at No. 3 doubles with his partner Franco Oliva a season ago.

Calloud, Mason Meier and Simon Birgerson received second-team all-MIAA-GAC honors in singles last year.

Midwestern State is 11-7 all-time against Northwest Missouri but has lost four of the last five meetings, including a 4-1 loss at home last April.

The Mustangs are home on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to face the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm for the 41st time. MSU leads the all-time series, 36-4, and has won five of the last six meetings, including a 5-2 victory in Durant, Oklahoma, last spring. Midwestern State has won 12 of the 14 meetings on home soil.

Southeastern features three players ranked in the Central Region by the ITA in November. Marin Jurkovic earned a No. 10 ranking. Stipan Madzr was ranked No. 15, and Juan Gonzalez was ranked No. 18.

Midwestern State travels to Tyler to meet Tyler Junior College next Friday at 1 p.m.
