KEARNEY, Nebraska -- Killian Gillou clinched a 4-3 victory for Midwestern State by winning No. 6 singles over Stephen Kossifas of MSU Denver, 6-2, 7-5, at Ernest Grundy Center on Saturday morning. The Mustangs improved to 2-0 to start the season.
Stephen Slocombe and
Charles Heffernan defeated Carlos Pinedo and Alejandro Jimenez, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles to give Midwestern State an early advantage.
Marcal Miret Avante and
Germano Setti secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Juho Kantola and David Kijak at No. 1 doubles. Avante and Setti won their second-straight match at No. 1 doubles to start the season.
MSU Denver won the first three singles matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Jean-Loup Auzias took down Heffernan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Jimenez lost the first set to
Luis Diaz Argente at No. 2 singles, 6-0, but the Roadrunner sophomore rallied and won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Setti lost two tight sets to Kantola at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-5.
Duque handled Billy McDermott at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4, but Midwestern State still trailed the Roadrunners, 3-2.
Avante kept hope alive for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Pinedo at No. 5 singles.
The outcome of the match came down to the result at No. 6 singles. Guillou easily won the first set over Kossifas 6-2 and pulled out a dramatic 7-5 win in the second set to clinch the second victory of the season for Midwestern State. MSU Denver falls to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Midwestern State opened the campaign with a 7-0 win over Newman on Friday night.
The Mustangs complete their stay in Kearney with a match against Augustana (S.D.).
