Mustangs bounce back after loss to NJCAA No. 1 Cowley County

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rebounded from a 4-1 loss to NJCAA No. 1-ranked Cowley College to beat No. 6-ranked Collin College in a doubleheader Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs, who moved to 5-3 on the season, return to action by playing host to No. 25-ranked Southern Arkansas on Friday. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

Cowley County 4, Midwestern State 1

Germano Setti put the Mustangs on the board against No. 1 Cowley College, who boasted a complete lineup of players ranked in the ITA junior college singles rankings.

The freshman from Carazinho, Brazil, beat No. 24-ranked Taiyo Hirano 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles position to improve to 4-3 in singles play.

But it wasn't enough to shift the momentum to the Mustangs.

Cowley County's No. 1-ranked doubles team of Bruno Nhavene and Boruch Skierkier clinched the opening point of the match with a 6-2 win over Setti and Marcal Miret Avante at No. 1 doubles.

That was shortly after Cowley's No. 3 doubles duo of Taiyo Hirano and Hanamichi Carvajal beat Stephen Slocombe and Killian Guillou.

Skierkier, ranked No. 8 nationally, extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Luis Diaz Argente at No. 1.

No. 7-ranked Bruno Nhavene put the Tigers within range of clinching the match outlasting MSU senior Charles Heffernan 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before Setti extended it with a win for the Mustangs.

But No. 3-ranked Reiya Komagata finished the match with a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 battle with Marca Miret Avante at No. 5.

It was the spring duel season opener for Cowley County.

Midwestern State 5, Collin College 2

Midwestern State bounced back with a dominating 5-2 win over NJCAA No. 6-ranked Collin County Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs quickly claimed the doubles point with Germano Setti and Marcal Miret Avante beating NJCAA No. 17-ranked Seth Seely and Djordje Kurcubic 6-3 at No. 1, and Luis Diaz Argente and Juan David Duque rolling to a 6-2 victory over Luis Ching and David Palomares at No. 2.

MSU's No. 3 duo of Stephen Slocombe and Killian Guillou finished off the sweep by taking down Tristan Vigneron and Gianni Mantia in an 8-6 tiebreaker.

Senior Charles Heffernan continued the momentum with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Vigneron at No. 2 singles before Setti pushed the MSU edge to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Palomares at No. 4.

Ching halted the run for Collin College battling for 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Miret Avante at No. 3 singles, but Diaz Argente delivered the clinching blow moments later with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Seely at No. 1.
