WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rebounded from a 4-1 loss to NJCAA No. 1-ranked Cowley College to beat No. 6-ranked Collin College in a doubleheader Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs, who moved to 5-3 on the season, return to action by playing host to No. 25-ranked Southern Arkansas on Friday. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
Cowley County 4, Midwestern State 1
Germano Setti put the Mustangs on the board against No. 1 Cowley College, who boasted a complete lineup of players ranked in the ITA junior college singles rankings.
The freshman from Carazinho, Brazil, beat No. 24-ranked Taiyo Hirano 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles position to improve to 4-3 in singles play.
But it wasn't enough to shift the momentum to the Mustangs.
Cowley County's No. 1-ranked doubles team of Bruno Nhavene and Boruch Skierkier clinched the opening point of the match with a 6-2 win over Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante at No. 1 doubles.
That was shortly after Cowley's No. 3 doubles duo of Taiyo Hirano and Hanamichi Carvajal beat
Stephen Slocombe and
Killian Guillou.
Skierkier, ranked No. 8 nationally, extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over
Luis Diaz Argente at No. 1.
No. 7-ranked Bruno Nhavene put the Tigers within range of clinching the match outlasting MSU senior
Charles Heffernan 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before Setti extended it with a win for the Mustangs.
But No. 3-ranked Reiya Komagata finished the match with a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 battle with Marca Miret Avante at No. 5.
It was the spring duel season opener for Cowley County.
Midwestern State 5, Collin College 2
Midwestern State bounced back with a dominating 5-2 win over NJCAA No. 6-ranked Collin County Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs quickly claimed the doubles point with
Germano Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante beating NJCAA No. 17-ranked Seth Seely and Djordje Kurcubic 6-3 at No. 1, and
Luis Diaz Argente and
Juan David Duque rolling to a 6-2 victory over Luis Ching and David Palomares at No. 2.
MSU's No. 3 duo of
Stephen Slocombe and
Killian Guillou finished off the sweep by taking down Tristan Vigneron and Gianni Mantia in an 8-6 tiebreaker.
Senior
Charles Heffernan continued the momentum with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Vigneron at No. 2 singles before Setti pushed the MSU edge to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Palomares at No. 4.
Ching halted the run for Collin College battling for 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Miret Avante at No. 3 singles, but Diaz Argente delivered the clinching blow moments later with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Seely at No. 1.
Guillou added a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kurcubic for the Mustangs, while Mantia slipped by MSU's Duque 2-6, 7-6 (6), 11-9 at No. 5 singles.
