WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Four different players drove in runs as Midwestern State earned its first win of the year, defeating Northwestern Oklahoma in the MSU Round-Up at Mustangs Park on Sunday afternoon, 4-2.
Madisen Mann hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run seventh inning, but the rally fell short and Southwestern Oklahoma defeated the Mustangs, 10-8, in their second game of the day.
MSU (1-6) opens conference play in Laredo on Friday with a doubleheader against Texas A&M International at Dustdevil Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
MIDWESTERN STATE 4, NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA 2
Jessika Roberts drew a bases loaded walk from Shakyrah Gladness in the second inning to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Taylor McKenzie started in the circle for the Mustangs and allowed two runs on four hits through three innings.
Midwestern State took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning.
Payton Griffin drove in
Chloe Bryant with a sacrifice fly to center field, and
Allie Monroe drove in
Bailey Brenek with a double to the gap in left center.
Chloe Bryant reached on a fielder's choice, and
Paige Bryant scored an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Kennedy Cameron worked 2 1/3 innings — striking out four batters — and was the winning pitcher. Cameron is 1-2 for the Mustangs.
Sydney Gonzales set down the final five batters to earn her first save.
SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA 10, MIDWESTERN STATE 8
After the Bulldogs scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning, Midwestern State answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Lexi Mills delivered a base hit to left field that scored
Kayla Bryant.
Payton Griffin and
Bailey Brenek scored when Monroe delivered a single to left.
The Mustangs trailed 8-3 before scoring a run in the bottom of the third, when
Sydney Shimkus drew a bases-loaded walk.
Jessika Roberts was caught attempting to steal second base — but
Grace Martinez raced home from third base in the fifth inning — and MSU trailed 8-5 .
Caitlin Delaney drove in two runs with a base hit in the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs a 10-5 lead.
The Mustangs mounted a three-run rally in the seventh inning as Roberts drove in Griffin with a sacrifice fly before Mann hit a two-run homer.
Gonzales allowed two runs over 1 2/3 innings and took the loss for the Mustangs, who sent five pitchers to the circle and walked 15 Bulldogs over seven innings.
Christine Billmeier threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs on two hits but issued five walks. Billmeier had two of the four strikeouts for Mustang pitching.
