WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State rolled to a 4-0 sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs, who are receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II poll, bounced back from a 5-1 loss to No. 15 Northwest Missouri State on Friday to improve to 4-1.
MSU's No. 3 doubles team of
Stephen Slocombe and
Killian Guillou clinched MSU's first point with a 6-4 win over Southeastern Oklahoma's Diego Orduz and Gen Naraya after the teams split at the top two positions.
MSU's
Luis Diaz Argente and
Juan David Duque scored 6-4 win over Juan Gonzalez and Marin Juokovic at No. 2 doubles before Southeastern's Stipan Madzar and Thabo Ncube beat German Setti and
Marcal Miret Avante at the No. 1 position.
The Mustangs finished off the match by taking the first three singles competitions to come off of the courts.
Diaz Argente took down Ncube in straight sets - 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) - at No. 2 to push the MSU advantage to 2-0.
Setti, who is ranked 18th in the South Central Region, pushed the Mustangs a point closer fighting to a win against Jurkovic 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Jurkovic, a junior from Zagreb, Croatia, is ranked 10th in the Central Region.
Miret Avante, who is ranked 13th in the South Central Region, finished the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Gonzalez, the Central Region's 18th-ranked player.
Midwestern State plays a trio of matches against junior college competition next week. The Mustangs travel to play Tyler Junior College on Friday before returning to the MSU Tennis Center to take on Cowley College (Kan.) and Colling College Saturday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
