THE LEAD
AUSTIN -- St. Edward's rode a hot start in the second half to an 85-71 win over Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference play Friday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Edward's made 10 of its first 12 shots of the second half to extend a four-point halftime edge to a 71-52 lead on Jamison Kay's dunk with 10:56 remaining.
The Hilltoppers led by as many as 21 points in the second half.
LEADERS
- Midwestern State sophomore
Mason Gibson poured in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting with three 3-pointers. It was Gibson's second performance with at least 20 points this season.
- Junior forward
Reggie Hill scored a season-high 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting while matching a season high with nine rebounds in 27 minutes off of the bench.

Pierre Sanders and
Will Shepherd each scored in double figures for the eighth time this season with matching 12-point performances.
- St. Edward's sophomore Sean Elkinton completed his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
- Jamison Kay (13 points) and Jayde Johnston combined for 25 of the Hilltoppers' 29 points off of the bench. St. Edward's substitutions outscored the MSU bench by 12 points.
GAME NOTES
- Midwestern State have not swept a regular Lone Star Conference road swing since beating Western New Mexico (94-59) and Eastern New Mexico (108-104) on January 12 and 14 of 2017.
- Midwestern State fell to 0-2 when shooting lower than 40 percent from the field as a team. The Mustangs connected on 26-of-68 shots (38.2 percent). The Mustangs have won all eight games when they shoot 40 percent or better.
- MSU committed a season-low five turnovers and were credited with a campaign-low nine assists on 26 made field goals.
- St. Edward's improved to 6-0 in games it controls the edge on the glass. The Hilltoppers out-rebounded Midwestern State by 13 (48-to-35).
- The 14-point win was the third consecutive double-digit victory for St. Edward's.
- The Mustangs lost in their first trip to the Recreation and Convocation Center since the 2009-10 season. MSU still leads its all-time series against the Hilltopper, 18-12.
- Midwestern State fell to 8-2 on the season and 2-2 in LSC play, while the Hilltoppers improved to 8-3 and 2-1.
