WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State ranked eighth in the final United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 released Tuesday afternoon.
The Mustangs finished an historic run through the 2023 season with an 20-1-1 record and reached the third round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship.
The Mustangs claimed their second Lone Star Conference title in the last three seasons, while claiming the league's postseason title for the third consecutive year. MSU was also the first side in 21 seasons to run the table in league play with a 9-0 mark.
Midwestern State claimed the automatic bid for its 10th consecutive NCAA postseason, advancing to the third round for the first time since 2017.
The Mustangs also finished the campaign with the best winning percentage in the storied program history with a 17-0-1 record (.972) bettering the 16-0-1 mark (.971) set in 2015. It was the fifth time the Mustangs have gone unbeaten during the regular season also achieving the feat in 2002, 2010, 2015, and 2017.
The Mustangs have carried a ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches' Poll in nine of the last 10 years. The No. 8 ranking is the highest since MSU finished fifth at the close of the 2017 season.
Franklin Pierce (N.H.) won its second consecutive national title with a 4-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday. The Ravens and Thunderwolves topped the final poll.
MSU finished as one of eight teams from NCAA Division II Super Region Four in the final poll, joining No. 2 Colorado State-Pueblo, No. 5 California State-Los Angeles, No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona, No. 18 Chico State (Calif.), and No. 21 Fort Lewis (Colo.).
California State-Monterey Bay and Colorado Mesa were receiving votes.
