Romano and Mustangs headed to LSC Postseason Tournament Semifinals

DENTON, Texas -- In the waning moments of the second overtime in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament at Pioneer Soccer Park on Monday night, fifth-seeded Midwestern State took its fourth corner kick against fourth-seeded Texas Woman's. Lexi Beck provided the service that allowed Allessandra Romano to head the game-winning goal into the upper right corner with eight seconds remaining as MSU avoided going to penalties and defeated the Pioneers, 2-1.

The Mustangs advance to the LSC Postseason Tournament semifinals and face Dallas Baptist at Patriot Soccer Field on Friday at 5 p.m.

Midwestern State has a four-match winning streak for the second time this season and improved to 10-4-5 for the season.

The game-winner seemed like déjà vu. In the 12th minute of the game, the Mustangs took their third corner kick. Beck drove her service to the back post from the left side, and Romano played the ball in the air to give MSU an early 1-0 lead.

Romano, a junior transfer from Jacksonville State, is the fifth Mustang to record a brace in the conference tournament, and the first since Destinee Williamson scored twice in a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico during the quarterfinals of the 2016 LSC Postseason Tournament in Commerce, Texas.

Freshman goalkeeper Allison Dellis made her postseason debut for the Mustangs and finished the night with eight saves.

TWU controlled the run of play during the second half and scored the equalizer in the 70th minute. Erica Brelove appeared to be attempting a cross to the back post from the right corner, but she tucked the ball inside the post and into the far-side netting to tie the match, 1-1.

The Pioneers outshot MSU, 22-16, including 7-2 during 20 minutes of overtime.

Beck, who has scored seven goals this season, now has eight assists and 22 points to lead the Mustangs. Romano has five goals this season and has earned at least one point in four of her last five matches.

Midwestern State has reached the semifinals of the LSC Postseason Tournament for the second-straight season. The Mustangs defeated West Texas A&M in the semifinals at Dallas last season, 2-1, before succumbing to Dallas Baptist in the final, 4-1.
