Dallas Baptist eliminates Mustangs with 1-0 victory in semifinal match

DALLAS -- Midwestern State faced top-seeded Dallas Baptist at Patriot Soccer Field in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament on Friday night. Freshman goalkeeper Allison Dellis made 11 saves to give the Mustangs a chance to advance with an upset, but Parker Coe broke through with a goal in the 73rd minute, and DBU prevailed, 1-0.

The match was scoreless through 45 minutes despite DBU outshooting the Mustangs, 15-5. Allessandra Romano had two shots in the opening half hour, but Carmen Lopez made two saves to keep Midwestern State off the scoreboard.

Lopez made her third and final save of the match in the 43rd minute denying McKenna Jenkins. Dellis made her sixth save of the first half in the 45th minute rebuffing Taylor Tufts, who targeted the bottom left corner but failed to score.

Dellis made three more saves in the opening nine minutes of the second half, but Mckenna Vela took a shot off a corner kick, Coe capitalized on the rebound with a shot from the top of the goal box after the traffic in front of the net knocked Dellis on her back at the goal line.

Marrisa Resendez missed a shot wide right 26 seconds later, and the Mustangs were called offside in the 76th minute. MSU would not get another chance at the equalizer, and the No. 10-ranked Patriots advanced to the final to face St. Mary's at Patriot Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Mustangs are 10-5-5 overall this season. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for Midwestern State, which was shut out for the fourth time. Dallas Baptist is 13-0-4 with a seven-match winning streak and they have not conceded a goal since Cassidy Savoy scored in the 49th minute of the regular season meeting at Stang Park on Oct. 21, shutting out its last five opponents.
