TYLER, Texas -- Maya Warrior scored her first collegiate goal to lift Midwestern State to a 1-0 win over UT Tyler in the regular season finale Friday night at the Perkins Soccer Complex.
It was the third consecutive win for the Mustangs, who improved to 9-4-5 on the season and will take the No. 5 seed into the LSC Postseason Tournament with a 6-3-3 league record.
MSU travels to face Texas Woman's in the quarterfinal round of the LSC Postseason Tournament on Monday. The match time is to be announced.
The Mustangs beat the Pioneers, 1-0, earlier this season at Stang Park. The teams finished in a three-way tie for fourth place at 21 points. However, TWU failed to play a league match last weekend against Lubbock Christian, forcing the league into a points-per-game scenario.
With one less match, the Pioneers finished with 1.91 points per game, with MSU and TAMIU averaging 1.75. Had TWU played and lost its canceled match against Lubbock Christian, the Mustangs would have prevailed in the three-way tiebreaker with a win over the Pioneers and a tie against the Dustdevils.
Instead, the Mustangs claimed the No. 4 seed due to having a better goal differential in conference matches.
But Friday night was Warrior's night to shine.
The 5-11 senior defender headed in a corner kick from
McKenna Jenkins just inside the near post in the 58th minute as MSU handed the Patriots (1-1-5) their first home loss of the season.
MSU's
Allison Dellis made six saves on the way to posting her second clean sheet of the season. The freshman from Denton lowered her goals against to 0.68 while moving to 3-0-3 in between the posts.
UT Tyler closes its season with a 3-5-9 mark.
