WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Zarria Carter gave Midwestern State a taste of what they can look forward to during the women's college basketball season as she scored a career-high 34 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in 35 minutes of playing time, but the Mustangs were outscored in the fourth quarter, 37-17, and fell to Adams State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday night, 102-84.
The 6-1 junior from Mansfield had 18 points and nine rebounds in the first half, but the Mustangs were trailing at intermission, 49-44. In the third quarter, MSU was able to overtake the Grizzlies and entered the fourth quarter with a 67-65 lead.
Adams State hit 10 of its 11 shots from the field in the fourth quarter and held the Mustangs to 6-of-22 shooting from the field over the final 10 minutes. The Grizzlies outscored MSU in the final six minutes, 26-6 and finished the night 34 of 69 from the field and shot 49.3 percent.
The Mustangs outrebounded Adams State, 44-39, and outscored the Grizzlies in the paint 54-48. MSU pulled 23 offensive rebounds and scored 28 second-chance points.
Kertisa Amos played 37 minutes before fouling out and pitched in 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting and dished out a team-high four assists. Amos and
Nikki Green each had four steals for the Mustangs, who are 0-2 to start the season after suffering an 83-65 loss to UC Colorado Springs in the season opener on Friday.
Midwestern State hit only 17-of-68 shots (25 percent) from the field on Friday, but against Adams State on Saturday night, the Mustangs hit 33-of-78 shots (42.3 percent) from the field.
Green and
Kyla Speights both had 10 points. Speights was 4 of 7 from the field and joined Green as the only two Mustangs to score from beyond the arc. Green was 3 of 14 from the field and hit 1-of-6 shots from 3-point distance. Speights was 1 of 4 from long distance.
The Mustangs were just 2 of 17 as a team from 3-point range. The Grizzlies were 7 of 16 from long range, led by Harmanie Dominguez, who poured in four 3-pointers on nine attempts. Angeline Nageak was 2 of 3 from beyond the arc and led the Grizzlies with a career-high 27 points. Dominguez finished with 22 points. Riahana Davis had 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and Kayla Harris was 5 of 7 with 13 points for Adams State, which improved to 3-1 against Lone Star Conference opponents to start the season.
Midwestern State travels to Durant, Oklahoma, for a clash with Southeastern Oklahoma at Bloomer Sullivan Arena on Saturday at 1 p.m.
