Lions roar past Midwestern State in final LSC meeting

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Arkansas-Fort Smith rolled to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 victory over visiting Midwestern State at Stubblefield Center on Friday night.

The Lions hit .306 in the opening set and never trailed in a set that was tied twice in the early stages. Fort Smith won the first seven points of the second set and never looked back, leading by as many as 12 points in the middle frame, when UAFS hit .350 and held the Mustangs to a .075 attack percentage.

In the final set, UAFS jumped out to a 9-2 lead and won 10 of the last 12 points to close out the match.

Arkansas-Fort Smith finished the match with a .289 hitting percentage, and Sophia McIntyre finished with 11 kills on 17 swings without an attack error to hit .647 for the Lions. Caelyn Gunn was 10-of-30 with four attack errors and hit .200. UAFS finished with 44 total kills, and the Mustangs had 27.

Midwestern State was playing without stalwart senior Lauryn Bourne and hit .131 for the match. Isabella Dickens had seven kills on 16 swings and hit .250 for the Mustangs. Alayna Guerrero had 20 assists in the loss, and Taygon Jones had a team-high 15 digs.

Midwestern State is 4-23 overall with a 1-14 record in the Lone Star Conference. Arkansas-Fort Smith improved to 21-7 overall with an 11-4 conference record. The Lions are 8-0 at home in their final campaign as members of the LSC.

The Mustangs close out the season on Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma Christian. First serve at the Payne Athletic Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
