WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 2 Midwestern State continued its historic run with a 2-0 win over St. Mary's in the regular season finale Wednesday night at Stang Park.
Junior
Samuele Muroni finished off a beautiful through ball from
Maycol Reyes in the 27th minute, then
Mere Escobar did what he does best by scoring his 16th goal off of a cross from
Liam Pritchard in the 67th minute to put away the Rattlers.
The Mustangs are set to host the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament on November 10 and 12 at Stang Park after becoming the first team to run the table in the league for the last 21 years with a perfect 9-0 mark. MSU was the last to turn the trick by winning all six league matches in 2002.
Midwestern State also finished the campaign with the best winning percentage in the storied program history with a 17-0-1 record (.972) bettering the 16-0-1 mark (.971) set in 2015. It's the fifth time the Mustangs have gone unbeaten during the regular season also achieving the feat in 2002, 2010, 2015, and 2017.
MSU also matched the longest winning streak in program history with its 15th consecutive victory. The Mustangs also won 15-straight from September 7 to November 7 during the 2008 season.
Muroni's goal was his fifth of the season and first since scoring a hat trick on three shots at Texas A&M International on October 14.
Escobar continued his sensational run by accounting for points in his ninth consecutive outing. It was his 16th goal of the season. The junior from Austin started the season by scoring goals in his first eight matches, and bookended the regular season with another incredible run.
Escobar also moved past Richard Canales and into seventh place on MSU's all-time points list with 106. Canales accounted for 105 points on 37 goals and 31 assists from 1979-81. Escobar enters the postseason with career marks of 42 goals and 22 assists.
St. Mary's closed the regular season with a 8-4-6 overall mark, going 2-2-5 in league play.
