WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It was another history making night at Stang Park.
No. 2-ranked Midwestern State expanded its winning streak to the longest in the storied program's history while moving on a conference postseason tournament final for the eighth straight year with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma Christian.
The Mustangs have now won 16-straight matches since settling for a 2-2 draw against No. 18 Rogers State way back on September 7 to stay unbeaten at 18-0-1.
MSU seeks its third consecutive LSC postseason tournament title Sunday afternoon against Dallas Baptist. Kickoff at Stang Park is set for 1 p.m.
The Patriots used a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks to survive West Texas A&M in Friday's early semifinal matches after the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Midwestern State bettered the program's previous mark of 15 consecutive wins set during the 2008 campaign.
And it was
Mere Escobar who provided the game winner with his 17th goal of the season as he converted his fourth penalty kick of the season in the match's 75th minute.
The opportunity arose from a nice series of passes from
Maycol Reyes to Escobar to
Jack Larkin, who was cutting inside the left side of the penalty box before he was taken down from behind by Oklahoma Christian's Joep Claassen.
Escobar then beat OC goalkeeper Fynn Koerner to the upper right corner of the net for the first and only goal of the match.
Escobar's 17 goals match the fifth-most in a single season in program history and are the most since Albert Rodriguez struck for just as many during the 2015 campaign.
Escobar, who has managed at least a point in 18 of 19 matches this season, has now scored a goal in each of his last three matches, six of the last seven, and seven of the last nine.
Junior goalkeeper
Adam Braman made three saves to secure his ninth shutout of the season while lowering his goals against average to 0.60.
Midwestern State controlled the run of play by out-shooting the Eagles, 15-4. And, for the second consecutive year, the Mustangs eliminated Oklahoma Christian from the LSC Championship tournament. Last year, the teams met in the final.
Oklahoma Christian finishes the year with a 5-9-6 mark.
