Mustangs fall in five sets to Lubbock Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's Lauryn Bourne delivered one of her top performances of the season Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The senior from Cypress, Texas, had a season-high 17 kills, finished off her fifth double-double of the campaign with 15 digs, and received 62 service receptions without an error.

But it wasn't enough to overcome Lubbock Christian's efficient attack as the Lady Chaps sent the Mustangs to their sixth straight loss in five sets -- 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9.

Midwestern State won the big points at the end of the first set with Riley Rabedeaux giving the Mustangs a set point with her fourth kill of the frame before Arrianna Fields and Elise Smith combined for a block to seal a 25-23 win.

Lubbock Christian evened the match by hitting .424 with 16 kills and two errors to take the second set, 25-18.

Bourne and Rabedeaux combined for 11 kills, while Isabella Dickens, Smith, and Fields put away three balls each as the Mustangs amassed 20 kills to take the third set, 25-23.

Midwestern State and Lubbock Christian exchanged runs in the fourth set with the Mustangs using gritty play to win seven consecutive points to pull to within 13-12 on a solo block by Smith.

But MSU was never able to pull even as Kiana Fallaha smashed eight of her match-high 19 kills to help the Lady Chaps pull even with a 25-19 fourth-set win.

Lubbock Christian took control of the fifth and deciding set with a 5-0 run powered by kills by Payton Murray, Lily Bickley, and Fallaha to take a 10-6 lead, then rode the momentum to close out the match.

Rabedeaux finished with a season-high 14 kills, while Fields and Dickens set career bests with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Sophomore Taygon Jones joined freshman Jenna Redding with 16 digs to lead a group of four Mustangs with 10-or-more digs.

Freshman setter Alayna Guerrero completed her 10th double-double of the season with 34 set assists to go along with 13 digs.

Midwestern State finishes off a four-match home stand Wednesday night with Eastern New Mexico. First serve at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is set for 7:30 p.m.
