WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State hit .400 through the first two sets, and five Mustangs had at least six kills in a straight-set victory over Eastern New Mexico at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Lauryn Bourne,
Elise Smith and
Riley Rabedeaux all contributed nine points in a 25-20, 25-15, 27-25 victory.
Jaiden Wright and Smith both hit .500 for the Mustangs. Bourne had nine kills and hit .174. Rabedeaux registered eight kills and hit .286. Smith finished with seven kills. Wright and
Arrianna Fields each terminated points six times during the match.
Midwestern State took a 17-11 lead in the third set, but the Greyhounds rallied back, led by Mikaela Garvin, to tie the set 18-18. The set featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. Garvin, who hit .500 with 12 kills for ENMU, did not have an attack error until match point as the Mustangs celebrated their first conference win.
MSU snapped a six-match losing streak and improved to 4-14 overall with a 1-5 conference record. The Greyhounds suffered an eighth consecutive defeat and have not won a set in that span. ENMU is 8-13 overall and 0-8 in Lone Star Conference matches.
Brooke Parker assisted Bourne to break an 8-8 tie in the opening set and started a five-point run for the Mustangs. ENMU never got closer than three points, and
Alayna Guerrero assisted
Elise Smith on her third kill to end the first set.
Parker finished the match with 46 assists, and Guerrero had 37 for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State continued to dominate in the second set. The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-1 lead on back-to-back kills from
Isabella Dickens, who finished the match with four kills on nine swings and was in on two of the five blocks for MSU.
Leading 6-4 in the second set, Midwestern State won eight of the next 10 points as Wright, Fields and Rabedeaux all recorded kills.Â
Taygon Jones delivered one of her season-high four service aces during the run.
After the Greyhounds went on a three-point run, MSU led 19-15, and Rabedeaux took over with four consecutive kills. Smith got the Mustangs to set point with a kill. Jones assisted on four straight points and closed out the set with an ace.
Jones, a sophomore from Bowie, Texas, finished with 15 assists, and the libero leads Midwestern State with 17 aces this season.
Midwestern State travels to Canyon, Texas, to face the defending national champions. West Texas A&M hosts the Mustangs at "The Box" on Friday at 6 p.m.
