WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State has assured itself a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament by defeating Lubbock Christian at Stang Park on Tuesday night, 1-0. The Mustangs improve to 8-4-5 overall with a 5-3-3 record in the LSC. Lubbock Christian slipped to 7-6-3 for the season and 4-5-1 in conference play.
Midwestern State dominated the second half of the match, outshooting the Lady Chaps, 10-2. The Mustangs got off five shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Lubbock Christian struggled to get the ball cleared out of its defensive third.
In the 58th minute,
Marissa Resendez got to a loose ball and sent a pass to the feet of Alessandra Romano on the left wing. Romano delivered the ball to
Cassidy Savoy atop the 6-yard box, and Savoy directed a header to the right of goalkeeper Kara Murray for the only goal of the game.
It was the fourth goal of the season for Savoy, who has scored three goals in the last three matches for Midwestern State. The senior from Fort Worth, Texas, has at least one point in each of the last four matches and at least one point in five of the last six matches.
Romano has two assists and a goal in the last three matches for Midwestern State.
Goalkeeper
Allison Dellis made her fifth start of the season for Midwestern State and posted her first clean sheet. Dellis made three of her four saves in the first half. The freshman stopped the LSC's leading goal scorer twice. Lexi De La Cruz has scored nine goals for the Lady Chaps and had two chances against MSU, but Dellis stopped her once in each half.
Dellis improved to 2-0-3 for the season, and Murray saw her record fall to 7-6-3.
Lexi Beck picked up her fourth yellow card of the season in the 41st minute of the match for dissent. Referee Adrian Coc initially pulled out a red card, but he corrected himself a moment later by pulling out the yellow card. Beck, who leads MSU with seven goals and four assists this season, played 57 minutes against LCU.
Midwestern State aims for a third straight win to close out the regular season when it visits UT Tyler on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. The Mustangs are 4-0-1 all-time against UT Tyler.
