WOMEN'S SOCCER

Midwestern State wraps up the regular season this week with two matches.

Lubbock Christian visits Stang Park on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the final home game of the year. Both schools are battling to finish in the top seven in order to make the LSC Postseason Tournament. Midwestern State enters the week with a 7-4-5 record overall and a 4-3-3 conference record. The Mustangs are unbeaten in four of their last five matches and sixth in the conference standings following a 3-1 victory over West Texas A&M.

Midwestern State has outscored its opponents, 25-18. Junior Lexi Beck leads the Mustangs with seven goals, six assists and 20 points. Freshman goalkeeper Allison Dellis earned her first collegiate victory with five saves against WT. Dellis is 1-0-3 with a 1.02 goals against average and a save percentage of .840.

Lubbock Christian is 7-5-3 overall with a 4-4-1 conference record and sit eighth in the conference standings. The Lady Chaps last match with Texas Woman's was canceled due to weather on Saturday.

Lexi De La Cruz leads the Lady Chaps and is tops in the LSC with nine goals this season. She also has six assists and is second in the conference with 24 points. Goalkeeper Kara Muray is 7-5-3 with a 1.15 goals against average and a .787 save percentage for the Lady Chaps.

Lubbock Christian won the last meeting, 1-0, as Celia Duarte scored and Abby Kone made five saves at LCU Soccer Complex. The all-time series is tied, 2-2.

The Mustangs travel to Tyler for the regular season finale on Friday and seek a fifth-straight win over the UT Tyler Patriots, who have never beaten MSU. Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 4-0-1.

Last year, Senna Garcia and Alexandria Sandlin scored goals as the Mustangs prevailed at home, 2-1. MSU is 2-0-0 all-time in Tyler, including a 2-1 overtime victory two years ago.

The Patriots have been outscored this season, 18-15. Alexia Moreira and Brooke Mullins have each scored three goals. Emily Clark and Daniella Wilken have split time in goal this season. Clark is 1-3-4 with a 1.19 goals against average and a .815 save percentage. Wilken is 1-1-5 with a 1.21 goals against average and a .784 save percentage.

The LSC Postseason Tournament begins on Nov. 7.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Lone Star Conference regular season champions, ranked No. 2 in the nation, host St. Mary's in the regular season finale at Stang Park on Wednesday night.

Midwestern State has a 14-match winning streak and is 16-0-1 overall. The Mustangs are 8-0-0 in conference play and 6-0-1 at home this season.

MSU is coming off a 4-2 victory at West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon. Mere Escobar and Gabriel Gacovicaj each had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs.

Escobar leads the conference and is third in the country with 15 goals this season, and the Austin native also has 10 assists (8th in the country) to lead the LSC. Escobar leads the nation with 40 points.

Midwestern State has outscored its opponents 52-11 and boasts the fourth-best goal differential in the nation at +41. MSU is the fourth-highest scoring team in the country and leads the LSC.

Goalkeeper Adam Braman leads the LSC and is 16th in the nation with a .668 goals against average and second in the LSC with a .771 save percentage. Braman is 16-0-1 with seven shutouts and three combined shutouts.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with St. Mary's, 35-5-0, and is hosting the Rattlers for the first time since November of 2021. The Mustangs won the last meeting in September, 2-1, as Max Gonzales and Mere Escobar scored goals for MSU.

St. Mary's is 1-18-0 at Midwestern State. The Rattlers only win in Wichita Falls came in October of 2019, when Carlos Blasco scored off a free kick with seconds remaining to lift St. Mary's to a 3-2 double overtime win.

St. Mary's is 8-3-6 overall with a 2-1-5 conference record and is third in the conference standings. The Rattlers are unbeaten in their last six matches with a 2-0-4 record following a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M International in San Antonio on Saturday night.

Cian Foley has nine goals and six assists to lead St. Mary's and he is fourth in the LSC with 24 points this season. Foley has scored the third-most goals in the LSC and has the third-most assists in the league, tied with three other players.

Goalkeeper Andre Schlaefli has appeared in the 13 matches with 12 starts for the Rattlers. Schlaefli is 5-2-5 with a 1.20 goals against average and a .722 save percentage.

Midwestern State is hosting the LSC Postseason Tournament beginning on Nov. 10.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Midwestern State is playing an exhibition game against the Texas Longhorns at Moody Center on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Longhorn Network.

Midwestern State begins a new era of women's basketball this season under the direction of head coach Brenita Jackson, who was 52-13 in two seasons at Texas Wesleyan.

After finishing 6-22 last season, a preseason poll of head coaches, media members and sports information directors has the Mustangs finishing 15th in the 2023-24 Lone Star Conference campaign.

Kertisa Amos has been named as a preseason Player to Watch in the LSC. Amos is one of six players from Texas Wesleyan that transferred to Midwestern State to play for Jackson.

The Mustangs have a total of 10 newcomers joining five players from last year's roster.

Midwestern State hosts its final homestand of the season this week. Texas A&M-Kingsville visits Friday at 6 p.m., and Texas A&M International will be at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Mustangs are 4-20 this season with a 1-11 conference record. MSU has lost its last six matches since defeating Eastern New Mexico in straight sets. Midwestern State is 3-7 at home this season.

Midwestern State is second in the LSC with 17.87 digs per set, and sophomore Taygon Jones leads the Mustangs with 4.3 digs per set.

Junior Riley Rabedeaux leads MSU and is 16th in the conference with 2.79 kills per set, and she leads the team with 3.10 points per set.

Freshman Isabella Dickens is hitting .254 in her freshman campaign to lead the Mustangs, who are hitting .143 as a team. In its last three matches, Midwestern State is hitting .222.

Freshman Alayna Guerrero is eighth in the LSC and leading the Mustangs with 6.53 assists per set.

Texas A&M – Kingsville is fifth in the LSC with a 9-2 conference record, and the Javelinas are 17-6 overall.

TAMUK leads the all-time series with MSU, 26-12, and has won 12 of the last 13 meetings, including a 3-1 victory in Kingsville last season. The Javelinas are making their first appearance at D.L. Ligon Coliseum since 2019, when the Mustangs earned a 3-1 victory.

Ayanna Jackson is third in the conference with an attack percentage of .354 for the Javelinas, and she leads the team with 2.99 kills per set. TAMUK is hitting .240 as a team, which is fourth-best in the LSC.

Elisa Carli leads the Javelinas with 5.68 assists per set, and TAMUK is seventh in the conference with 12.31 assists per set.

TAMUK is sixth in the conference with 13.22 kills per set and seventh in the league with 2.18 blocks per set. Jackson is seventh in the LSC and leads the team with 1.08 blocks per set.

Texas A&M – International is 6-5 in the conference with a 15-9 overall record. The Dustdevils are 4-5 on the road this season and have lost three of their last four matches entering the week.

Arian Guerra averages 3.68 kills per set, and Hannah Thompson, a 6-2 fifth-year senior, is hitting .298 through 24 matches and 88 sets for the Dustdevils. Thompson and Jasmin Garcia each have 64 blocks this season. Thompson leads the team with 14 solo blocks.

Emma Lade leads TAMIU with 10.86 assists per set, and Giulia Hortelan is averaging 4.74 digs per set.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with TAMIU, 6-4, but the Mustangs have lost the last two meetings. The Dustdevils have not returned to D.L. Ligon Coliseum since a 3-1 victory in 2019.

Midwestern State is coming off back-to-back victories for the first time this season and is .500 with a 4-4 overall record, and the Mustangs are 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference.

MSU makes its final road trip of the season on Saturday with a trip to LeGrand Stadium for a battle with the defending Lone Star Conference champions. Angelo State is 5-3 this season with a 4-2 conference record.

The Midwestern State defense continues to impress. The Mustangs are only allowing 19 points per game. In the last three weeks, MSU has only yielded 23 points to Central Washington, Western Oregon and Western New Mexico combined.

The Mustangs wiped out Western New Mexico last week, 56-7, holding WNMU to 134 total yards and 2.9 yards per play. MSU had 10 tackles for loss and four sacks in the resounding victory.

Quinterrius Hargrave is the leading tackler for MSU with 42 total tackles, including 23 solo stops. Michael Gary has seven sacks for the Mustangs, and Jaylen Shaw has two interceptions with five pass breakups.

The only team in the LSC that is allowing fewer points per game is Angelo State. The Rams are holding opponents to 18.6 points per game following a 27-10 victory over West Texas A&M in Canyon on Saturday night.

The Rams are the third-highest scoring team in the league with 32 points per game. Quarterback Gerald Gardner is third in the league with 1,631 yards passing. He has completed 131 of 224 passes for 14 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Brayden Wilcox is the eighth leading rusher in the LSC with 57.4 yards per game. Wilcox has rushed for 459 yards on 80 carries and has scored two rushing touchdowns for the Rams.

Midwestern State is the second-best rushing team in the league with 224.3 yards per game, and Jalen March is the second-leading rusher in the conference. March is averaging 87.1 yards per game and has gained 697 yards on 133 carries. In the win over WNMU, March rushed for 147 yards on 21 carries to lead the Mustangs.

On the opening drive of the second half, March carried the ball five times for 74 yards, including a 46-yard run. Quarterback James Cooper scored on a 1-yard run to cap the drive.

Cooper made his fifth start and completed 6-of-8 passes for 99 yards and threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jajuan Mason. It was Cooper's third touchdown pass of the season. The redshirt freshman is completing 51.65 percent of his passes for 450 yards and has thrown seven interceptions.

Justin White has emerged as a leading receiver for the Mustangs with 10 receptions for 143 yards in four appearances this season.

Ritse Vaes reset his own school record by scoring 18 kicking points in the win over WNMU. Vaes also matched his own program record by connecting on four field goals, drilling kicks from 45, 29, 18, and 31 yards out. He also converted all six of his point-after attempts.

Vaes has now made 13 of his 18 field goal attempts this season and has scored the third most kicking points in program history with 191.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with Angelo State, 16-9, and has won five of the last seven meetings. The Rams closed out a perfect conference campaign last season with a 37-19 victory at Memorials Stadium.

MSU is 7-5 all-time at San Angelo and won its last visit in 2021, 35-17, as Dillon Sterling-Cole threw for 387 yards and five touchdowns, including a 76-yard strike to Mason. March had 32 yards on 11 carries in the victory and caught an 8-yard touchdown pass.

The Mustangs return to Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11 to celebrate Military Appreciation Day with a season-ending matchup against Texas A&M – Kingsville at 1 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY

Midwestern State competes in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championship Saturday morning at at the Lubbock Christian Cross Country Course. The women's 6K race begins at 10 a.m.

A total of 34 teams and a minimum of 24 individual selections not on advancing teams compete in the NCAA Division II Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in Joplin, Mo. The top three teams from each of the eight regionals earn automatic qualification with 10 other selected in an at-large process. The top two individuals and any others finishing in the top five at regionals also advance to the championship. The remaining eight spots are selected through a similar at-large process.

The Top 25 individual finishers garner All-South Central Region accolades. Nine different harriers earned all-region accolades in program history led by Ashley Flores, who earned the honors three consecutive years in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Flores was a part of a quartet to gain honors in the regional championship season of 2011 joined by Brissia Montalvo, Janel Campbell and Kim Krezonoski. Montalvo also gained honors in 2010 along with Sydnee Cole, who was also an all-region runner in 2009. Katie Stepp, Kayla Hendrix and Lindsey Pate were the program's first all-region performers in 2008, while Gabby Ruiz was the last to gain honors in 2014.

Midwestern State is coming off of its best finish at the Lone Star Conference Championship since 2018. The Mustangs placed behind nationally ranked West Texas A&M and Dallas Baptist at the Eastern New Mexico Cross Course in Portales.

Sophomore Ella Pando earned all-conference honors by placing 15th with a 6K time of 22:53.22, finishing just ahead of freshman teammate Jaycee Lyons (23:00.99/16th).

Sophomore Jadyn Dangerfield (23:05.90/19th), senior Elizabeth Butzke (23:20.62/23rd), and sophomroe Rosalene Reyes Perez (24:34.79/45th) also turned in team countable performances.

The South Central Region rates amongst the toughest in all of NCAA Division II with a field that includes nine nationally ranked programs: No. 2 Adams State, No. 3 Colorado School of Mines, No. 4 Western Colorado, No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 8 Colorado State-Pueblo, No. 10 UC Colorado Springs, No. 17 Colorado Christian, No. 24 Fort Lewis, and No. 25 Dallas Baptist.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Midwestern State is playing an exhibition game Sunday against East Texas Baptist. Tipoff at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is 5 p.m.

Midwestern State was picked to finish ninth in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll of coaches, sports information directors, and selected media.

Senior guard Pierre Sanders, who was tabbed as a preseason player to watch, leads a group of five returning letter winners from last season's 12-16 squad that finished 11th in the league standings with a 9-13 mark.

The 5-10, 165-pound guard from Hutto earned All-LSC third-team honors last season, averaging 13 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.

Sanders led Midwestern State to a BLIA Cup Championship during Mustangs' trip to Taiwan in August. Sanders poured in 28 points in an 87-84 win over National Chengchi of Taiwan in the tournament final. The Mustangs rolled to poll wins over Shih Hsin (Taiwan), Malaysia Select, and Nagoya Gakuin (Japan) before beating Lincoln (New Zealand) in the semifinal round. Four Mustangs averaged in double figures during tournament play, including Mason Gibson (13.0 ppg), Bakari LaStrap (12.4 ppg), Sanders (11.4 ppg), and Will Shepherd (10.6 ppg).
