WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State scored three second-half goals to rally past West Texas A&M, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Practice Field.
The win pushed the Mustangs (7-4-5) into a tie for fifth place in the Lone Star Conference race, standing with 15 points with a 4-3-3 league mark with two matches to play.
West Texas A&M struck first when Avery Putnam collected a deflection off of a restart on a free kick in the 22nd minute. The freshman midfielder from Austin found room near the top of the penalty area and blasted a right-footed shot into upper right corner of the net to give WT the early 1-0 edge.
The Mustangs leveled the match with the help of the WT defense in the 49th minute. MSU's
Lexi Beck served a cross which bounded toward the far post. West Texas A&M's Mollie Ferro, who was pressured by
Cassidy Savoy, attempted an awkward clearance that ended up in her own net.
Midwestern State put away the match later in the second half.
Junior
Allessandra Romano doubled back for an errant pass and dribbled toward goal down the left forward channel. She was able to rip a shot from just inside the penalty box to the upper right corner of the net to give the Mustangs their first lead of the match at 2-1.
It was the Canadian's third goal of the season and first since tallying scores in consecutive matches against St. Mary's and St. Edward's on Oct. 7 and 11, respectively.
Junior
Isabella Cruz put away the match with a goal that came on an attempted cross near the end line in the 80th minute. It was her fifth goal of the season.
Midwestern State faces Lubbock Christian in its home finale Tuesday night at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
