CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Mere Escobar and
Gabriel Gacovicaj accounted for a goal and an assist each to lift the No. 2-ranked Mustangs to a 4-2 win over West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at The Pitch at Buffalo Sports Park.
MSU (16-0-1, 8-0-0 LSC), which clinched the Lone Star Conference title earlier in the week, extended its winning streak to 14 matches. The streak matches the second longest in program history and is just one game shy of the program's longest set during the 2008 campaign.
Escobar accounted for the opener by scoring his 15th goal of the campaign in the 20th minute. The Austin native has now contributed to the score line in 16 of 17 matches this season and leads all of NCAA Division II with 41 total points.
But West Texas A&M took temporary control of the match with two goals less than 60 seconds apart in the 24th and 25th minutes.
Elhadj Diaoune tallied his first goal of the season just moments after WT goal leader Matteo Landais scored his seventh goal on a penalty kick. The goals provided the Buffs with a short-lived 2-1 advantage just over midway through the opening half.
MSU defender
Juan Galindo leveled the match with his second goal of the season in the 44th minute.
Gacovicaj accounted for the game winner in the 48th minute on an assist from Escobar, then assisted
Dereck Espinal put-away goal in the 60th minute.
Midwestern State closes the regular season Wednesday night against St. Mary's at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
