WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Maycol Reyes scored a hat trick to lead the No. 2-ranked Mustangs to a Lone Star Conference title clinching 4-0 win over St. Edward's Wednesday night at the MSU Soccer Practice Field.
MSU (15-0-1) claimed its 14th overall league championship since joining NCAA Division II in 1997. It is the Mustangs' seventh LSC title to go along with four from the Southwest Soccer Conference and three from Heartland Conference. Midwestern has one conference championships in five of the last eight seasons including three consecutive in 2016, 2017, 2017, and another in 2021.
The Mustangs are set to host the LSC Postseason Tournament semifinals and finals set for November 10 and 12 presumably at Stang Park.
MSU extended its winning streak to 13 matches while remaining perfect at 7-0 in LSC play. The streak matches the fifth longest streak in program history and is the longest since the 2008 squad set the school's high mark by winning 15 straight from Sept. 7 through Nov. 7.
Reyes put the Mustangs out on the right foot with a pair of goals in the first half, scoring the opener on an assist from
Dereck Espinal before adding another goal before intermission by knocking in a rebound of Gabrial Gacovicaj's shot.
Reyes finished off the hat trick with his seventh goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder
Mere Escobar.
Escobar tacked on his 10th assist of the season and has now scored points in seven consecutive matches and in 15 of his last 16. NCAA Division II's leader in points now 38 and has scored an LSC-high 14 goals this season.
Sophomore
Jecsi Orellana-Espinal closed out scoring for the Mustangs by heading his third goal of the season off of a corner kick from Joshua Milla.
Midwestern State hits the road to take on rival West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at The Pitch in Canyon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
