LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 2-ranked Midwestern State used a two scoring splurges to wipe out Lubbock Christian, 5-1, Wednesday night at the LCU Soccer Field.
Sophomore
Dereck Espinal and
Maycol Reyes scored goals in the opening five minutes of the match, then LCU's Pablo Galietero Diez pulled the Chaps to within a goal early in the second half.
Then MSU's
Mere Escobar took over the match accounting for a goal and assisting on two more during a six-minute stretch midway through the second half.
Escobar, who is now averaging 2.5 points a match, raised his season totals to 13 goals and nine assists as achieved milestones with his 40th collegiate goal and 100th point.
Escobar became the ninth MSU player to reach 100 points and first since Jake Joy massed 101 from 1994-96. His 40 goals are the seventh most in program history and the most in the NCAA Division II era.
The senior from Austin started the run by serving a pass down the left attacking channel for Reyes, who completed his first brace of the season with his fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute.
Escobar then nudged a short pass to the middle of the penalty area to assist on
Daniel Yu's first goal of the campaign in the 62nd minute.
Three minutes later, Reyes returned the favor, setting up Escobar's 13th goal of the season on a drive from 15 yards out.
Midwestern State (13-0-1) extended its current winning streak to 11 matches which is the longest since the Mustangs won the same number of matches consecutively from Sept. 29-Nov. 4, 2016.
MSU's current unbeaten run of 14 matches is the longest since the Mustangs went 35 matches without a loss spanning the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Midwestern State takes on Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
