Midwestern State rides dominate first half, resurgent Ogechi to 70-60 win over WNMU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Derrick Ogechi continued to round into form Thursday night at  D.L. Ligon Coliseum pouring in four 3-pointers on the way to a 16-point, four-rebound, and four-assist performance to Midwestern State to its fifth win in the last six games by taking down Western New Mexico, 70-60.

HOW IT HAPPENED >>>

Midwestern State dominated the first half on both ends of the floor to take a 37-17 lead into the break.

MSU limited the other Mustangs to 7-of-25 shooting (28 percent), while shooting 50 percent from the field (15-of-30) with five 3-pointers.

Midwestern followed a pair of 7-0 spurts with an 8-0 run ignited with a pair of triples from redshirt-freshman Mason Gibson to run out to a 29-10 lead with 6:21 remaining in the opening half.

MSU led by as many as 22 points in the opening half allowing the Mustangs to hold of WNMU's furious second half rally to secure the win.

- Senior Derrick Ogechi came out of the Christmas break shooting 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the floor while shooting in 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the arc while averaging 16.3 points over the last three games. The 6-3 guard hit four more 3s to lead the Mustangs with 16 points against Western New Mexico. He added four rebounds and four assists.
- Senior forward Jermane Carter notched his third double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
- Senior John Weger was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 12 points in 21 minutes off of the bench. It was his second double-figure performance of the season as he scored all 12 points in the second half.
- Junior guard Pierre Sanders remained effective despite a tough shooting night (1-for-7). He still scored seven points by going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
- Midwestern State outscored WNMU by 12 points during James Ingham's 14 minutes on the floor as the redshirt-freshman from Melbourne, Australia delivered the squad's top +/- number.
- Senior transfer Jaylin McFadden scored a season-high 15 points off of the bench to lead Western New Mexico.

GAME NOTES >>>

- Midwestern State improved to 14-2 in its all-time series against Western New Mexico. The Mustangs have won all seven games played at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
- MSU has won five of its last six games to level its season record at 7-7 while moving to 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
- Western New Mexico dropped its 10th consecutive Lone Star Conference road game. WNMU last beat Oklahoma Christian 78-62 on Jan. 15, 2022.
