Mustangs nearly end streak at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State came excruciatingly close to snapping a string of hapless results against Angelo State, but the Rambelles pulled out a five-set victory to extend its winning streak over MSU to 26 consecutive matches. The Mustangs came up just short at the Junell Center on Saturday, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 25-22, 16-18.

In the fifth set, MSU took a 14-12 lead after an Aaliyah Burras kill to earn its first of three match points. Grace White and Kaila Garnett recorded kills for ASU to draw even, 14-14. A block by Alex Serna and Kelli Ell gave the Mustangs a third match point at 16-15.

It initially appeared as though MSU had won the match at 17-15 when the official indicated that Midwestern State had won a rally. However, replay confirmed a touch by MSU, and Garnett's seventh kill of the match extended the set for Angelo State.

A ball handling error by the Mustangs and Jaden Woolley's ace ended the match, giving the Rambelles a narrow victory over Midwestern State, which fell to 3-1 in five-set matches this season.

The Mustangs played at a high level in the fourth set to force the decisive fifth set. Midwestern State hit .306 with 17 kills and just six errors on 36 attacks. The Mustangs enjoyed two four-point runs in the penultimate set and won four of the last five points, including kills from Taylor Anderson and Ell as well as a service ace from Autumn Roach.

The Maroon & Gold continued to play at an exceptional level in the fifth set by hitting .414 with 14 kills and just two errors in 29 attacks.

Midwestern State got off to a promising start in the match by hitting .211 in the opening set.

Freshman Robyn White had two kills during a span of the first set that saw the Mustangs win 7-of-8 points, and Serna delivered an ace as MSU went ahead of Angelo State, 15-10. White and Serna delivered kills in a 3-0 run as the Mustangs took a 23-17 lead. Ell and Burras closed out the frame by winning two of the final three points for the Mustangs.

Autumn Roach won the first point of the second set with a kill for MSU, but Angelo State, led by Sydney Mundowksy and Cate Boldrick, reeled off five straight points. Caleigh Enax delivered a service ace as Angelo State took a 10-3 lead in the set.

MSU moved to within four points before the Rambelles won 10-of-13 points to get to set point. Down by 11, the Mustangs cut the deficit by going on a four-point run. Robyn White won three consecutive service points before ASU closed out the set.

Angelo State won 11-of-13 points to take a 20-12 lead in the third set. Midwestern struggled throughout the set committing 12 attack errors while landing only nine kills on 35 attacks. Kaila Garnett and Cate Boldrick closed out the set with kills to give the Rambelles a 2-1 lead.

Burras had 14 kills on 24 attacks and hit .542 with six blocks in the match. Ell finished the match with 15 kills on 40 attacks and hit .300 for the Mustangs, who fell to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Angelo State is 8-8 with a five-match winning streak and is 4-0 in the LSC.

Midwestern State returns to the floor Wednesday night to face Lubbock Christian at the Rip Griffin Center. The match begins at 6 p.m.
