Willms post double-double but Mustangs stumble at Falcon Dome

ODESSA, Texas -- Aaliyah Burras and Sadie Portmann each contributed seven kills, and Midwestern State finished with 36 kills as a team, only two fewer than UT Permian Basin. However, the Mustangs committed 18 more errors and suffered a 23-25, 18-25, 12-25 defeat at the Falcon Dome on Friday night.

Sophomore setter Regan Willms had her fourth double-double of the season, finishing the match with 25 assists and 11 digs for the Mustangs, who fell short in a closely contested opening set.

UTPB never led by more than three points in the first set.

After falling behind 6-3, MSU rallied to take a 10-8 lead. Mayce Barker and Logan Terrazas had kills in a four-point run for the Falcons as they went ahead, 12-10. Portmann had two kills, and an attack error by UTPB allowed MSU to reclaim the lead, 13-12. The set stayed close until the Falcons won three of the final four points to take the opener.

After hitting .224 in the opening frame, Midwestern State settled for a .185 attack average in the second set, while the free-swinging Falcons hit .357. UTPB also had four aces on its way to a lopsided victory in the middle set.

Maya Detwiler, Daylee Doggett, Devin Alcoser and Stephanie Sanchez served up the aces in the second set, and those were all the aces the Falcons recorded in the match.

The deflated Mustangs only put down nine kills and committed 11 attack errors in the final set. UTPB did not have an error on 35 attacks with 11 kills on its way to a decisive third set victory.

Burras hit .385, and Taygon Jones had 18 digs in the loss.

MSU finished the night with 22 attack errors, and the Falcons only had four for the entire match.

Midwestern State is 3-12 overall with a 1-2 record in the Lone Star Conference. UT Permian Basin improved its overall record to 6-7 and is 1-1 in conference play.

The Maroon & Gold travels to San Angelo to face Angelo State at Junell Center/Stephens Arena on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
