SERIES HISTORY | Midwestern State and Simon Fraser meet for the first time on the gridiron Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, but the Mustangs and Red Leafs in consecutive NAIA National Men's Soccer Championship games in 1982 and 1983 -- both matches were played in in Wichita Falls. Overall, MSU and SFU have played five times on the pitch with Red Leafs claiming wins in 1977, 1982, and 1983 NAIA tournaments before the Mustangs rolled to a 3-0 win last season at Stang Park. Midwestern State and Simon Fraser have also gone head-to-head in men's and women's golf.

MSU AGAINST THE GNAC | The three remaining football playing member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference joined the Lone Star Conference as association members for football heading into this season. The leagues enjoyed a scheduling alliance for the 2019 and 2021 campaigns. Overall, the Mustangs are 2-2 against current and past football playing members of the GNAC. MSU beat Humboldt State 35-10 in 2015 and 55-12 in 2018 -- both games were played in Wichita Falls. The Mustangs fell 37-22 at Western Oregon in 2019 and 30-20 at Central Washington last season.

EXTENDED SUMMER | The forecasted high for Wichita Falls is 99 degrees on Saturday with the temperature remaining in the mid-90s around kickoff time. In comparison, the forecasted high temperature in Burnaby, British Columbia is 78 degrees. The highest temperature is 2022 has been 86 degrees.

THE DEAN OF THE LSC | Bill Maskill became the first six-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year while leading the Mustangs to their fifth league title. Maskill's 165 career coaching victories are the fourth most by active NCAA Division II head coach and ninth most amongst all active NCAA football coaches. His 152 wins as a head coach at a Lone Star Conference institution are the second most in league history. Ron Harms won 172 games at Texas A&M-Kingsville in 21 seasons from 1979-99.

MAROON SEPTEMBER | Midwestern State owns a 63-11 mark in games played in September since the start of the Bill Maskill era in 2002. The Mustangs are 27-2 in September games since the start of the 2014 season with losses coming at Angelo State in 2019 and in the 2022 season opener against Colorado State-Pueblo.

HOME SWEET HOME | Midwestern State has owned Joe Golding Field by posting an 84-19 record (.816) during the Bill Maskill era (since 2002). The Mustangs had a seven-game home field winning streak snapped in the season opener against Colorado State-Pueblo. MSU is 28-5 since the start of the 2015 campaign.

MUSTANGS TRACKS | Midwestern State leads NCAA Division II with three defensive touchdowns this season including a 52-yard game winning interception return by Melik Owens in a 28-21 win over Michigan Tech last week... The Mustangs also sport a 63-yard pick six by Justin Guillory against Colorado State-Pueblo and a 43-yard interception return for a score by Dylon Davis against Eastern New Mexico... The MSU defense has scored touchdowns in the last four regular season games and stretches five-straight including a safety at West Texas A&M last season... The Midwestern State offensive line has not allowed in 211 snaps this season -- a number that obviously also leads NCAA Division II... MSU also leads the LSC and ranks third in NCAA Division II in fewest tackles for loss allowing 2.33 per game... Senior wide receiver Kylan Harrison will become the 10th player in program history to amass 100 career receptions with his next catch... Harrison, who is MSU's all-time leader with 21 career TD receptions, ranks fourth in all-time receiving yards at 1,763... Harrison needs 109 receiving yards to move past former teammate Xavier Land (1,871 yards from 2016-19) to move into third place... Senior quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole moved into 10th place on MSU's all-time passing yards list last week against Michigan Tech and now has 2,410... Sterling-Cole is ninth with 22 touchdown passes and is in range of Rahsaan Bell (26 TDs/6th), Jake Glover (25 TDs/7th), and Brandon Kelsey (24 TDs/8th)... Senior defensive end Melik Owens is MSU's all-time leader with 39.0 tackles for loss and yards from tackles for loss (184)... Owens is second all-time with 16.5 quarterback sacks and trails Russ Grissom, who had 32.0 sacks from 1989-91... Sophomore Ritse Vaes has converted all nine of his point-after attempts this season and accounted for two successful field goals of 31 and 34 yards against swirling wins at Eastern New Mexico... Vaes converted four point-after attempts last week against Michigan Tech to extend his run to 23 straight... Vaes has been successful on 39-of-40 PAT attempts in his career with his lone miss being blocked last season against Texas A&M-Kingsville...
