Portmann leads offensive surge in five-set win over Cameron

DENTON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Sadie Portmann put down a career-high 21 kills and added 19 digs to lead the Mustangs to a 25-16, 25-27, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9 win over Cameron Saturday morning in the Lone Star Conference Crossover at Kitty Magee Arena.

The Mustangs overcame an attacking lull hitting .120 as a team through the second and third sets on the heels of a hot swinging start.

MSU came out on fire in the opening set hitting .351 with 18 kills. The Mustangs raced out to a 6-1 advantage, then then closed the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-16.

The Mustangs were on the verge of taking a two-set lead after Cameron setter Anjolie Navarrete followed a ball handling error with a bad set to give MSU a look at consecutive set points.

But the Aggies rallied to score five of the next six points culminating with consecutive blocks by Paris Patterson and Caitlyn Henderson to level the match at a set apiece at 27-25.

Cameron rode the momentum to win the first eight points of the third set to coast to a 25-18 win.

The resilient Mustangs solved their offensive woes by putting down 18 kills in the fourth to force a deciding set.

Portmann was one of four Mustangs to set season highs as senior middle hitter Aaliyah Burras had 15 kills and hit .273, while freshman Robyn White put down 13 kills and hit .233.

Senior Taylor Anderson also set a campaign high with 10 kills.

Midwestern took control of the fifth set by winning seven of eight points to take a 12-6 lead following an Aggie attack error.

The Mustangs close play at the LSC Crossover Saturday night against Texas Woman's. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
