Yet another Davis pick six sparks fourth quarter turnaround

Mustangs rally past ENMU, 28-14

PORTALES, N.M. -- Midwestern State was down and in need of a lift early in the fourth quarter in Saturday night's Lone Star Conference opener at Greyhound Stadium.

Once again, it was Dylon Davis who delivered as the Mustangs flipped the script on Eastern New Mexico in a 28-14 win.

Davis made a bold read coming of his man to jump in front of a cross route for a 43-yard interception for a touchdown to provide a spark for MSU and, more importantly, 21-14 lead.

It was his fourth career interception return for a touchdown and all have come in clutch moments. The first came in the season opener at Quincy season and another started a 23-point come-from-behind win over Texas A&M-Commerce. Davis also provided a lift in MSU's LSC title clinching win over UT Permian Basin in the 2021 season finale.

But it was senior defensive lineman Zed Asowata who set the stage for Davis' heroics forcing Eastern New Mexico quarterback Kason Martin into a quick release by getting home on a stunt.

Midwestern State forced a three-and-out on the 'Hounds' ensuing drive before the game away.

Freshman running back Devin Cross polished off an eight-play, 67-yard drive with a 15-yard burst up the middle to give the Mustangs a 28-14 advantage with 4:23 to play.

Redshirt-freshman Tre Jordan picked off Martin later in the quarter allowing the Mustangs' offense to drain the clock ending the game inside the ENMU 10-yard line.

Cross, who delivered the knockout blow with a 40-yard run on the last possession of the game, finished with a game-high 139 yards on 18 carries to buoy MSU strong rushing attack as the Mustangs closed the game with 265 yards on the ground.

Junior Neiko Hollins went the distance at quarterback completing 13-of-30 passes for 184 yards.

Junior linebacker Quinterrius Hargrave led the defense with eight tackles, while Jordan and senior linebacker Justin Guillory had seven each.

The MSU defense produced big results down the stretch forcing a turnover on downs as a 16-play, 56-yard ENMU drive stalled at the MSU 21-yard line after the Greyhounds took 14-13 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Mustangs sandwiched interceptions by Davis and Jordan around a three-and-out allowing the offense to polish off the win.

Midwestern State takes on Michigan Tech Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
