No. 22 Midwestern State remains undefeated with 2-0 win over Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Midwestern State extended its season-opening win streak to three games and remained unbeaten in the all-time series with Rogers State by defeating the Hillcats, 2-0, Thursday night at Soldier Field.

The Mustangs posted their second consecutive shutout after defeating Regis in the TAMIU Classic, 4-0, on Saturday. Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Braman made five saves to post the clean sheet on a damp night.

Jack Larkin gave Midwestern State the lead in the third minute. Mere Escobar sent a well-placed cross to the back post, and Larkin headed the ball past Rogers State goalkeeper Declan Viljoen. Larkin scored his first goal, and Escobar notched his first assist of the season for the Mustangs.

MSU capitalized on a corner kick at 29:28 of the first half. Juan Galindo and Rory Doyle each headed the ball just outside the 6-yard box before Sulahmana Bah took advantage of his opportunity in the air from inside the goal box to give Midwestern State a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs defense suffocated the Rogers State attack, as the Hillcats struggled to find many quality scoring chances. At 84:50, Ethan Bonaparte of MSU was called for a foul in the area. Marcos Vasallo took the penalty kick for Rogers State, but Braman made the save to preserve the shutout for the Mustangs. Rogers State remains winless in the all-time series, as the Mustangs improved to 10-0-1 against the Hillcats.

Midwestern State finished the night with eight shots on goal. Both teams were called for 11 fouls and carded twice. Doyle and Jackson Reading, a pair of substitutes, were issued yellow cards for the Mustangs.

The home opener is the next match on the schedule for Midwestern State, which will host Fort Hays State in the second match of the MSU Classic at Stang Park on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Southern Nazarene and Texas A&M International will kick off the festivities at 2:30 p.m.
