Midwestern State hopes to keep postseason hopes alive Saturday against Texas A&M International

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State battles Texas A&M International in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are set for 4 and 6 p.m.

The games are set for broadcast on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network at MSUMustangs.com/streaming.

LSC POSTSEASON PICTURE

The top 10 teams in the Lone Star Conference standings advance to the league's postseason tournament set for May 5-7 at the site of the regular season champion. Midwestern State (6-20) is tied for 13th with UT Permian Basin and is three games behind 10th-place St. Edward's (9-17) with four games to play. Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M International are tied for 11th at 8-18.

BY THE NUMBERS

20 |  Midwestern State played its 19th and 20th games against teams in the National Fast-pitch Coaches' Association's Top 25 Friday against No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville. That makes 20 of 41 games against nationally ranked opposition.

13 |  Midwestern State has played in 13 games decided by one run this season going 2-11.

12 |  Sophomore Hanna Hetherington's 12 home runs rank third in the Lone Star Conference and 23rd in NCAA Division II. The 12 homers are tied for the 12th most in a single season in program history and are the most since Carli Woolsey hit 13 homers in 2019.

12 |  Senior Ashley Turner ranks eighth in the Lone Star Conference and 85th in NCAA Division II with 12 doubles. She is second on the club hitting .344 with seven homers and 20 RBIs.

11 |  Bailey Brenek hit .441 during a team season best 11-game hitting streak which was snapped in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The junior hit four homers during streak while improving her team-best batting average to .391. Brenek, who leads the Mustangs with 17 multi-hit games, has reached base in each of her last 12 games.

4 |  Freshman Mikey Dominguez' four triples rank for the in the Lone Star Conference and 40th in NCAA Division II. Of Dominguez' 30 hits this season, 13 have been for extra bases also including three doubles and six home runs.

AT THE HELM

HEAD COACH BRITTANIE TALLEY is in her first season at the helm of the Midwestern State program. Talley amassed a 129-75 record (.632) over the past five seasons at Vernon College including a 42-12 run while leading Chaps to the 2021 NJCAA regional tournament. That came on the heels of a 21-1 start in 2020 before the season was cut short by the pandemic. Prior to Vernon College, Talley played a role in a successful three-year run at Alabama State helping the Lady Hornets to a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title and a trip to the NCAA Division I regionals in 2016. She competed professionally for the Skovde Saints winning the Swedish championship as the league's pitcher of the year in 2011. She enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Jackson State where she earned second-team All-SWAC honors earning 27 career wins while posting seven shutouts. She also hit .320 in 172 career at bats.

ABOUT THE DUSTDEVILS

Texas A&M International is coming off of a doubleheader split Friday night at Texas Woman's winning the first game 4-0 before falling in the Game 2, 10-3. Junior shortstop Heather Ruiz leads the Dustdevils with a .381 batting average with eight doubles, three triples and two homers. Ruiz rides a six-game hitting streak into Saturday's twin bill at Midwestern State. Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Victoria Gonzalez hits .346 with eight doubles, six homers and 18 RBIs. Junior catcher Briana Arredondo tops the Dustdevils with seven homers and 27 RBIs. TAMIU has a .244 team batting average and has been shut out 10 times this season. Junior Darrian Smith tops the Texas A&M International pitching staff going 11-11 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Smith is coming off of a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts against Texas Woman's.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State and Texas A&M International meet for the 13th and 14th times on the diamond Saturday at Mustangs Park. The Mustangs lead the series which dates back to the 2008 season by a 10-2 margin. MSU won the first 10 games of the series, but the Dustdevils swept the Mustangs last season in Laredo. Midwestern State has won all three games between the teams at Mustangs Park including a 6-1 win in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division II South Central Regionals.
