WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Emilija Visic provided the finishing touches to a 5-2 win over UT Tyler Sunday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The sophomore from Phoenix dominated the deciding set to beat Chloe Chawner at No. 5 singles helping the Mustangs improve to 18-5 on the season and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
MSU pulls into a three-way tie atop the league standings with St. Mary's and Angelo State while Cameron is one win back at 4-1.
The Mustangs play host to the Aggies Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
Visic also combined with
Casie Curry to seal the doubles' point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 win over UT Tyler's Leony Deutschmann and Tanvikhaa Saravanan at No. 2.
Midwestern State also claimed a victory at No. 1 doubles with
Anda Ghinga and
Hannah Yip beating Delara Zamani and Chawner 6-3 after the Patriots claimed at No. 3.
UT Tyler battled back in singles play splitting first four matches off the courts.
But the Mustangs used wins by Curry over Saravanan (6-2, 7-6) at No. 2 and
Ethne Dowling at No. 4 to set up the clinching opportunity.
Dowling won by retirement over Dnyanada Patil recovering from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to take the second set in a tiebreaker. The match was stopped prior to the start of the deciding set.
Visic's victory came moments before MSU's
Skylar Minns completed a 7-5, 6-2 win over Chloe Dix at No. 6 singles.
UT Tyler fell to 10-7 on the season and to 4-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
