Brenek, Cameron put up strong efforts against No. 14 Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's Kennedy Cameron was up to the task against another worthy opponent at Mustangs Park.

Just two weeks after pushing No. 20-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce scoreless into the ninth inning, Cameron was in a very familiar position Friday night against No. 14 Angelo State.

The sophomore right-hander from Longview held the power hitting Rambelles at bay allowing Bailey Brenek's second homer of the night to stand for a 1-0 lead heading into the final inning just ahead of a line of thunderstorms.

But Angelo State took advantage of an error while loading bases on a leadoff single by Maleya Burns and Ashlyn Lerma drew a one-walk.

Junior Paxton Scheurer followed with her NCAA Division II leading 19th homer for a grand slam allowing the Rambelles to complete a doubleheader sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

Angelo State belted four home runs on the way to an 11-5 win in the opener including two from Burns and one each from Scheurer and Ashlynn Box.

Brenek also gave MSU a lead in Game 1 blasting her third homer of the season to straight away center field in the first inning.

The Mustangs answered Box's two-run homer in the third inning by reclaiming a 3-2 lead on Peyton Lee's two-run double in the bottom of the frame.

Angelo State pulled away with four runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and sixth innings and another in the seventh.

Paige Bryant laced a single through the left-side of the infield to drive in a run for MSU in the sixth before freshman Natalie Castillo contributed her first collegiate RBI in the seventh.

Hanna Heatherington paced Midwestern State's six-hit attack in Game 1 by going 2-for-3, while Ashley Turner, Brenek and Hetherington had two hits each in the nightcap.

Midwestern State takes on No. 17 Lubbock Christian in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitches are set for noon and 2 p.m.
