No. 22 ranked Mustangs take back-to-back wins versus No. 17 Washburn and Northeastern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State took both games of their doubleheader against No. 22 Washburn and Northeastern State on Saturday, March 5. The Mustangs overcame the Ichabods by 4-3 at MSU Tennis Center. MSU beat NSU by 5-2 to claim a 6-3 record for 2022.

MIDWESTERN STATE 4 - WASHBURN 3

Washburn took the doubles point with wins at the second and third lines. Casie Curry and Emilija Visic notched their first loss together at No. 2. The duo fell 4-6 to Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields. Marta Torres and Svea Crohn defeated Skylar Minns and Sydney Williams 6-4. The Mustang pair are 4-2 on the season.

Anda Ghinga and Hannah Yip pushed their win streak to three after clinching a 7-6 victory over Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid at the top spot.

Ghinga took a big three-set win over No. 48 ranked Torres at the No. 1 singles line. Ghinga's 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 score put her at 5-3 for the season.

Yip fell at the second spot to hold a 3-5 record on the season. The freshman dropped to Martensson 3-6, 2-6.

Ethne Dowling is 3-3 in singles play after clinching a 7-5, 6-2 score over Schmid at the third spot.

Curry defeated Jung 7-5, 7-6 at No. 4. The junior is 3-2 in all singles play and 2-2 from the fourth line.

Visic kept her undefeated record with a big three-set win against Crohn. The sophomore went 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the fifth spot to secure a 4-0 record.

Minns dropped her second match of the season at No. 6. The sophomore was overcome by Fields 5-7, 3-6.

MIDWESTERN STATE 5 - NORTHEASTERN STATE 2

MSU took an early lead against the Riverhawks by claiming the doubles point. Curry and Visic won their third match together with a 6-1 victory over Vera Carvalho and Melissa Vera at No. 2. Ghinga and Yip collected a 6-4 to keep their win streak at No. 1. They beat Alisha Moldakhmetova and Maria Popova.

Minns and Williams dropped their second match of the day at No. 3. The duo fell 1-6 to Emilia Cosatto and Belinda Jayaprakash.

Curry was bested by Moldakhmetova at the third line. With the 1-6, 2-6 defeat, the junior is 3-3 in singles play.

Visic followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chiara Carnelutti. This was her first victory at No. 4 for the Mustangs.

Minns rebounded with her sixth win at No. 6. The sophomore inked a 6-2, 6-4 score against Vera.

Ghinga posted her second singles win of the day at the top spot. She overcame Popova 6-4, 6-4.

Yip followed with a 6-4, 6-4 takeover of her own. The freshman is 4-5 at the No. 2 spot for the year.

Northeastern State secured their second point with a win at No. 6. Jayaprakash ousted Williams 7-5, 5-4 to put the freshman at a 3-3 record.

Midwestern State returns to play as they travel to Magnolia, Ark., next weekend. The Mustangs face Ouachita Baptist on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. MSU takes on Montevallo and Southern Arkansas in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. All matches will take place at Live Oak Tennis Courts.
