SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Midwestern State takes on Western New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference twin bill Sunday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field. First pitches are slated for 1 and 3 p.m. (Central Time).

ABOUT THE MSU MUSTANGS

Senior Ashley Turner leads the Mustangs hitting .426 with six doubles, three homers and 12 RBI... Turner ranks 22nd in the LSC in slugging percentage (.745), 26th in on-base plus slugging percentage (1.205) and is 29th in batting average (.426)... Turner is hitting .429 during her current six-game hitting streak with two doubles, two homers and five RBI... Turner has a hit in 10 of MSU's 11 games this season and has reached base in each of MSU's 13 games this season and in 19 consecutive games dating back to last season...  Junior Baley Brenek ranks 30th in the LSC with a .425 batting average... Brenek boasts a team-best eight multiple-hit games... Senior Payton Griffin belted home runs in both games of Friday's doubleheader at UT Permian Basin... Griffin has driven in a run in each of her last four games... Junior Malea Rodriguez has allowed one earned run on five hits over 8 1/3 inning spanning her last three appearances... Sophomore Kennedy Cameron posted at least four strikeouts in each of her last five appearances including a season-high nine at Northeastern State on Feb. 27... 

HEAD COACH BRITTANIE TALLEY is in her first season at the helm of the Midwestern State program. Talley amassed a 129-75 record (.632) over the past five seasons at Vernon College including a 42-12 run while leading Chaps to the 2021 NJCAA regional tournament. That came on the heels of a 21-1 start in 2020 before the season was cut short by the pandemic. Prior to Vernon College, Talley played a role in a successful three-year run at Alabama State helping the Lady Hornets to a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title and a trip to the NCAA Division I regionals in 2016. She competed professionally for the Skovde Saints winning the Swedish championship as the league's pitcher of the year in 2011. She enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Jackson State where she earned second-team All-SWAC honors earning 27 career wins while posting seven shutouts. She also hit .320 in 172 career at bats.

ABOUT THE WNMU MUSTANGS

Western New Mexico has lost seven consecutive games and 10 of the last 11... The Mustangs hit .313 as a team boasting six players with a .300-or-better batting average... Senior Janae Ruiz is 14-of-28 (.500) at the plate in 13 games and seven starts this season... Ruiz is hitting .818 (9-for-11) during her current four-game hitting streak... Junior Cecy Jurado boasts a .426 batting average with a triple, two home runs and 8 RBIs... Sophomore outfielder Breeanna Simmons is WNMU's top run producer hitting .286 with three doubles, a triple, three homers and 16 RBI... ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State and Western New Mexico meet for the 25th and 26th time on the diamond Sunday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field. MSU owns a 19-5 edge in the series which dates back to the 2004 season. The programs exchanged sweeps over the past two seasons with WNMU winning two in Silver City in 2020 (7-6 and 16-2 (5)) and MSU claiming two victories in Wichita Falls in 2021 (10-7 and 10-2 (6)). Midwestern State is 2-4 all-time against WNMU in Silver City.
