WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State fought a tough battle on Friday afternoon to clinch a 4-3 victory over Southwest Baptist.
Charles Heffernan clinched the victory at the fifth singles line to send the Mustangs to 3-2 on the season.
On the doubles side,
Brice Bradshaw and
Corbin Ford played their first match together. The duo dropped 1-6 to Carlos Corser and Max Sanoja at the second spot.
Marcal Miret Avante and
Stephen Slocombe inked their first victory together after dropping in the Cowley County match on Wednesday. The pair took a 6-3 score over Ilyes Khelifi and David Szeri at the No. 3 spot.
The Bearcats notched the doubles point at the top line. Alvaro Nunez and Youssef Nabil overtook
Ben Westwick and Stephan Andrei in their debut match. The score was 7-6.
Miret Avante went 3-0 on the season with his win at No. 3 singles. The freshman went 7-5, 7-5 against Makary Ademek.
Nabil claimed a three-set victory against Andrei at the fourth spot. No. 50 Andrei drops to a 2-3 record with the 7-5, 2-6, 2-6 defeat.
Bradshaw rebounded with a big three-set win at the No. 2 line. The sophomore overtook Nunez by a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 score. Bradshaw moves to 3-2 on the year.
Westwick followed with his own three-set victory at the first singles spot. The junior is now 2-2 overall and 2-0 at No. 1 singles. He won 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 against Szeri.
SBU tied the match with Corser's sixth line win. He won 6-4, 6-4 against
Jean Muniz, who suffered his first loss of the season.
Heffernan battled hard at No. 5 to bring MSU the victory. The junior rebounded after dropping the first set 4-6 and posted a 6-2, 7-5 score in the final two sets. His record stands at 3-1.
Midwestern State is back on the courts with their last home match of the week. The Mustangs face No. 22 Washburn at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday, March 5. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
