WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State takes on No. 14 Angelo State Friday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Mustangs Park. First pitches are slated for 4 and 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE MUSTANGS

Midwestern State is tied for 11th in the Lone Star Conference standings with a 5-11 league record... The Mustangs are in a stretch of facing ranked opponents in 12 out of 14 games beginning with No. 20 Texas A&M-Commerce on March 18 followed by No. 1 UT Tyler on March 20, No. 23 Oklahoma Christian on March 25, No. 14 Angelo State on April 1, No. 17 Lubbock Christian on April 3, and No. 20 West Texas A&M on April 8... MSU is 0-12 when facing teams ranked in the NFCA Division II  Top 25 this season and has lost 18 straight against ranked opponents dating back to a 7-5 win over No. 2-ranked UT Tyler on March 8, 2020 in its last game before the remainder of the 2020 campaign was called due to the coronavirus pandemic... The Mustangs rank 14th in the LSC in hitting (.249 team batting average), 15th in pitching (6.46 team ERA) and 13th in fielding (.947 fielding percentage)... During Lone Star Conference play, MSU ranks 10th in the league in hitting (.275), 13th in pitching (5.97) and 10th in fielding (.952)... MSU ranks eighth in the LSC and 51st in NCAA Division II averaging 0.84 home runs per game... The Mustangs blasted 24 home runs over their last 21 games after hitting just two homers in their first 10 games of the season... Midwestern State has hit at least one homer in 12 of its last 18 games including a run of seven straight games from March 4-14... Senior Ashley Turner leads the Mustangs with a .376 batting average with nine doubles, six homers and 19 RBIs...Turner is eighth in the LSC and 90th in NCAA Division II with nine doubles... Turner has reached base in each of her last nine games... Junior Bailey Brenek is second on the team hitting .368 with eight doubles, a triple and two homers while driving in 15 runs... Brenek leads the Mustangs with 13 multiple-hit games... Brenek connected for the game-tying home run with one out in the seventh inning in MSU's 5-4 win over Cameron Sunday in Lawton...Sophomore Hanna Hetherington is third in the LSC lead and ranks 14th in NCAA Division II with 10 home runs... Hetherington hit nine of her 10 home runs during an 11-game stretch from March 6-20 including two-homer games against Western New Mexico (3/6), St. Mary's (3/12) and St. Edward's (3/14)... Freshman Peyton Lee is hitting a team-best .412 (14-for-34) with five doubles and has multiple hits four times over the last 12 games... She raised her season batting average from .217 to .333 recording at least one hit in nine of the 12 games during the stretch... Lee notched a save on March 14 against St. Edward's in her first pitching appearance of the season allowing one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings, then pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against No. 1 UT Tyler on March 20... Lee made her first collegiate start last week at Oklahoma Christian allowing five earned runs on eight hits in six innings... Freshman Mikey Dominguez hit .387 (12-for-31) with a double, a triple, four homers and 10 RBIs during a 10-game stretch from March 4-18... Dominguez posted five two-hit games during the stretch connecting for four home runs... Dominguez smashed her fifth home run of the season during Game 1 Friday at Oklahoma Christian, then went 3-for-3 with three RBIs including driving in the winning run in Game 2 Sunday at Cameron with a sacrifice fly...

HEAD COACH BRITTANIE TALLEY is in her first season at the helm of the Midwestern State program. Talley amassed a 129-75 record (.632) over the past five seasons at Vernon College including a 42-12 run while leading Chaps to the 2021 NJCAA regional tournament. That came on the heels of a 21-1 start in 2020 before the season was cut short by the pandemic. Prior to Vernon College, Talley played a role in a successful three-year run at Alabama State helping the Lady Hornets to a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title and a trip to the NCAA Division I regionals in 2016. She competed professionally for the Skovde Saints winning the Swedish championship as the league's pitcher of the year in 2011. She enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Jackson State where she earned second-team All-SWAC honors earning 27 career wins while posting seven shutouts. She also hit .320 in 172 career at bats.

ABOUT THE RAMBELLES

Angelo State split doubleheaders against Texas A&M-Commerce and UT Tyler last week in San Angelo... The Rambelles have won 10 of their last 13 games which includes doubleheaders against nationally ranked Oklahoma Christian, West Texas A&M, UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Commerce... Angelo State ranks seventh in the LSC in hitting (.325 team batting average), eighth in pitching (2.92 team ERA) and ninth in fielding (.959 fielding percentage)... During Lone Star Conference play, the 'Belles rank eighth in the league in hitting (.293), eighth in pitching (3.80) and ninth in fielding (.953)... Angelo State leads the LSC and ranks second in NCAA Division II with 48 home runs... The Rambelles average 1.5 homers per game which ranks third nationally... ASU ranks 14th in all of NCAA Division, but is fifth in the LSC in scoring averaging 7.06 runs per game... The Rambelles had a streak of nine consecutive games with a home run snapped Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce... During those nine games, Angelo State clobbered 22 home runs... Junior Paxton Scheurer ranks second in NCAA Division II with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs... Scheurer, a transfer from UNLV, hit homers in five consecutive games from March 18-25 including a three-homer game against UT Permian Basin and a two-homer game against Western New Mexico... Scheurer leads the Rambelles with a .436 batting average... Sophomore Madison Fernandez also has eight homers, while sophomore Ashlynn Box and freshman Lindsey Evans have connected for seven... Junior Ashlyn Lerma hits .352 and ranks third in NCAA Division II and second in the LSC with 32 stolen bases... Sophomore Genesis Armendariz leads Angelo State in the circle with a 14-3 record posting a 1.97 ERA and 1.23 WHIP...

ABOUT THE SERIES

Midwestern State and Angelo State play for the 58th and 59th times on the diamond Friday evening at Mustangs Park. The Rambelles lead the series which dates back to the 2004 season by a 39-18 margin. Angelo State has won the last 11 games in the series and 14 of the last 15. MSU's last beat the Rambelles 10-8 on April 3, 2016 at Mayer Field in San Angelo. Angelo State swept a three-game series in its last trip to Mustangs Park in 2018, but MSU took three of four from the 'Belles in the previous series in Wichita Falls on April 3-4, 2015. Angelo State is 9-8 against MSU at Mustangs Park and was 4-1 at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
