Mustangs fall to NJCAA No. 2 Cowley County

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Marcal Miret Avante accounted for Midwestern State's lone win in a 6-1 loss to  to No. 2 ranked Cowley County at MSU Tennis Center on Wednesday. The Mustangs move to 2-2 on the season as CC remains undefeated for 2022.

Brice Bradshaw and Stefan Andrei suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Boruch Skierkier and Gaston Erhardt. The Tigers took the second doubles flight 6-0. Bradshaw and Andrei hold a 2-1 record.

Miret Avante and Stephen Slocombe fought to a 2-6 score in their first match together. Takeshi Taco and Andoni Garmendia clinched the No. 3 doubles line at 6-2 to secure the first point for Cowley County.

No. 4 Alex Martinez Roca and Ben Westwick claimed a huge victory at the top doubles spot. The duo overcame No. 5 Aymeric Bruno and Taiyo Hirano by 7-6 (13-11). Martinez Roca and Westwick stay undefeated at 4-0 for the season.

No. 15 Martinez Roca fell at the top singles line in a three-set battle to No. 1 Taco. The 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 2-6 defeat put the Mustang senior at a 1-1 record.

Bradshaw also took his first hit at the second singles line. The sophomore fell 2-6, 0-6 to No. 2 Skierkier to move to 1-1 and 2-2 in overall singles play.

Westwick donned a three-set fight against No. 13 Erhardt at the third singles line. The Tiger gained the 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win for Cowley County. Westwick sits at 1-2 on the season.

No. 50 Andrei faced No. 18 Harry Collins at the fourth line. Andrei fell 4-6, 2-6 in his second loss at No. 4. The freshman is 2-2 overall.

Miret Avante's clutch three-set win over Garmendia kept MSU from the shutout and secured his 2-0 record. The freshman posted a 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory at No. 5 singles.

Charles Heffernan and Hirano faced-off at the sixth line. Hirano came away with the 6-3, 6-1 win to ruin Heffernan's undefeated record. The junior goes to 1-1 at No. 6 singles and 2-1 in all duals.

Midwestern State finishes the week with two home matches. The Mustangs take on Southwest Baptist on Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m. MSU faces No. 22 Washburn on Saturday, March 5 at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at MSU Tennis Center.
