TYLER, Texas – In Midwestern State's lowest offensive output of the season, the Mustangs end the season in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament. Their 20 percent conversion from the floor gave UT Tyler the chance to take away the 55-38 victory.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter. MSU tallied just 3-of-16 from the field for 19 percent. UTT improved by just a hair for 5-of-14 from the floor, keeping their largest lead at six.
The game saw a three-minute stretch without field goals from either side.
Markayla Johnson led with three points while Martina Machalova tallied five for the Patriots.
UT Tyler's 7-0 run in a two-minute stretch during the second period helped pushed the lead to nine.
Frances King's three pointer with 4:24 was key in keeping the Mustangs in the game as they continued to shoot below 20 percent. The guard went 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from behind the arc for ten points in the quarter to keep the Mustangs within five.
Destini Whitehead led UT Tyler with four points as MSU held the Patriots to 13 points for two straight quarters. UTT led at half by 26-21.
Hannah Reynolds grabbed a team-high four points in the third quarter as Midwestern State tallied nine points. The team's shooting woes continued as they registered 21 percent in the period.
UT Tyler's biggest jump in the game came from their 9-of-11 conversion at the line. Machalova knocked down four of her five opportunities at the charity stripe to help the Patriot side to a 13-point lead at the end of the quarter.
Shawnisay Millar fouled out mid-way through the fourth to MSU's avail. The Mustangs turned in 16 percent shooting from the floor and were 2-of-2 from the line. Mandey Withey and Millar each turned in five points in the game.
Whitehead continued to drill with six points in the final period. The guard led both teams with 17 points, going 7-of-15 from the floor. Machalova followed with 16 points and four rebounds while Liah Davis tallied ten points and 14 rebounds.
Reynolds clinched her fifth double-double of the year with ten points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mustangs.
Frances King tallied ten points, going 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Midwestern State concludes the 2021-22 season at 14-13 with an 8-8 LSC record.
