LAREDO, Texas -- Midwestern State continued to lean on its defensive effort and intensity Saturday afternoon in its first trip to the Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
But
Terrell Wilson and
Jermane Carter combined for 34 points of efficient offense to carry the Mustangs to a 66-61 win over Texas A&M International.
Midwestern State improved to 12-14 on the season, while moving into a tie for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings with Angelo State at 8-6.
The loss eliminated Texas A&M International from postseason contention. The Dustdevils fell to 12-12 and 4-9.

THE TURNING POINT
Midwestern State finishing strong at the free throw line to secure the win over Texas A&M International after struggling to complete the task in Thursday's loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Mustangs connected on 5-of-6 shot from the charity stripe including four consecutive makes by junior
Terrell Wilson.
Texas A&M International never led in the second half, but did manage to tie the game on three occasions. The Mustangs answered with 3-point makes by
Pierre Sanders and
Terrell Wilson on the first two occasions before Wilson and
Amaechi Chukwu converted layups on consecutive possessions to give MSU the lead for good at 57-51 with 5:30 to play.
LEADERS
- Junior guard
Terrell Wilson went 6-of-7 from the field with three 3-pointers before hitting four consecutive free throws in the final minute to finish with a game-high 19 points.
- Senior
Jermane Carter had three dunks and went 6-of-8 from the floor with a 3-pointer on the way to his 19th double-digit scoring performance of the season. The 6-7 forward finished with 15 point and four rebounds.
- Midwestern State outscored TAMIU by team-high eight points with
Luke Hamilton on the floor. The senior forward scored his only points from the field on a post move in the closing minutes and made his first appearance of the season the free throw line going 3-for-4. He closed the game with five points and five rebounds while making his fifth start of the year.
NOTABLES
- Texas A&M International missed its first 15 3-point attempts before Journee Phillips made one from the right bend with 8:17 to play in the second half. The Dustdevils connected on four of their last seven to shoot 18.2 percent for the game (4-of-22).
- Midwestern State has limited the opposition to less than 40-percent shooting in each of its last five games and in nine of the last 13. The Mustangs are 8-5 during that stretch.
- Midwestern State shot 51.1 percent from the field Saturday against Texas A&M International. It is the fifth time this season the Mustangs shot better than 50 percent. MSU has shot 40-percent or better in 13 of the last 15.
