No. 17 WT scores twice in second half to hold off Mustangs

CANYON, Texas -- No. 17 West Texas A&M scored two goals in the second half to roll to a 2-0 win over Midwestern State Saturday night at The Pitch.

The Lady Buffs extended their home field winning streak to 10 matches while improving to 11-1-2 on the season and 5-1-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

MSU took its second straight loss to fall to 5-7-1 overall and fell into a tie for 11th place in the LSC with seven points at 2-5-1.

West Texas A&M broke through with the opener in the 50th minute when senior defender Maliyah Mendoza made a run down the right attacking channel advancing all the way to the end line before serving a negative ball back into the middle of the 18-yard box.

Sophomore Sydney Hokuf's shot was blocked and bounded to the center of the box. Freshman Nicole Gray collected the loose ball, made two touches, and then buried the ball in the lower right corner of the net to give WT a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Buffs added a second goal in the 65th minute on a strong individual effort by sophomore defender Kyndahl Britton. Britton muscled her way through the MSU defense and unleashed a left-footed shot from just inside the left corner of the 18-yard box to net her first collegiate goal into the upper left portion of the net.

Midwestern State managed 12 total shots, while placing seven on frame including two each by Cassidy Savoy, Olivia Okoye, and Sydney Van Noy.

MSU sophomore goalkeeper Lexi Jackson finished the match with eight saves.

The Mustangs continue on the road to face Lubbock Christian Wednesday night at the LCU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
