LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State made its first ever visit to LCU Soccer Complex, but Lubbock Christian goalkeeper Abby Kone did not allow the Mustangs to enjoy their stay as she made five saves, and the Lady Chaps defeated MSU Wednesday night, 1-0.
Kone stopped an
Olivia Okoye blast in the eighth minute that denied Midwestern State an early lead in the match.
In the 19th minute the Lady Chaps scored when Abcdee Herrera sent a short pass to Celia Duarte, who was able to move between three Mustang defenders and send a left-footed shot from near the penalty spot into the upper-right portion of the net, scoring the only goal of the game.
In the 25th minute Kone covered up a ball sent inside the 6-yard box from the right wing by
Lexi Beck to preserve the lead.
In the 50th minute
Keyara Zuniga tested Kone, but once again the Mustangs were denied as the shot from the left wing was stopped.
Cassidy Savoy was on the back post for an MSU corner kick with five minutes remaining and was able to volley the ball in front of the net, but Kone kept Midwestern State from scoring the equalizer.
Lexi Jackson finished the night with four saves for the Mustangs.
Lubbock Christian outshot MSU, 15-10, but both teams had five shots on goal.
