WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State snapped a three game losing slide with a flowing 72-58 victory over St. Edward's on Thursday night in Ligon Coliseum. Four Mustangs scored in the double digits to secure MSU's first Lone Star Conference win of the season. The Mustangs are 6-5 overall.
The team started strong in the first quarter by holding SEU to just 6 points and 11 percent shooting from the field. Midwestern State secured 18 points with four each from
Markayla Johnson and
Hannah Reynolds. The Mustangs shot 50 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the line.
Johnson added two blocks and two steals for the game. Reynolds just missed the double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, shooting 6-10 from the floor. The senior also collected three blocks and two steals.
The Hilltoppers fought back to win the second quarter, 19-16. Morgan Gary tallied nine of her 18 points and added 12 rebounds to claim the double double. The forward was 7-10 from the field and recorded four assists.
The visitors found their rhythm and shot 46 percent from the floor and 40 percent from range in the second quarter. Midwestern State stayed consistent at 50 percent from the field and 83 percent at the line.
Sheridan Bostic went three of four from behind the arc to secure nine points while
Morgan Lenahan shot 75 percent from the line in her six-point performance. The senior wrapped up with 11 points and led both teams with eight assists. The home side went into halftime up by 34-25.
Yasmine Sifaoui and
Shawnisay Millar propelled MSU in the second half. Sifaoui posted ten points, going 4-5 in the paint and drained both free throw attempts. The sophomore finished with 12 points in 13 minutes of play.
Millar led the Mustangs with 15 points, draining 13 in the second half. The junior was 7 of 11 from the floor and added four boards. The Hilltoppers went seven of 13 from the floor in the third quarter while the Mustangs were held at 40 percent shooting.
The team bounced back in the final period outscoring SEU 21-12.
Frances King clinched nine points in the victory while making seven assists. Midwestern State was three of six from the line, but had their best shooting from the floor at 69 percent.
Junior Taylor Cockerill notched 13 points for the Hilltoppers, making two of four attempts from range. Bella Muscoreli contributed nine points and six boards for St. Edward's who fall to 8-5 on the season.
Midwestern State is back at D.L. Ligon Coliseum for another Lone Star Conference match-up. The Mustangs face St. Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 8 for their final game of the weekend. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. with coverage information available online at MSUMustangs.com
