Chukwu, Weger lead Mustangs past Cameron, 79-55

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It may not have been flashy, but Midwestern State got exactly what it was looking for Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs controlled the paint allowing the team come away with its third win in the last four games with a 79-55 win over Cameron.

With the victory, MSU improved to 8-12 on the season, but more importantly the Mustangs even their Lone Star Conference record at 4-4.

"The game plan was not very complicated," MSU coach Justin Leslie said. "It was to go inside and be aggressive in the paint and exploit those matchups."

Jermane Carter was a big part of the plan. The senior forward led the way with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and stayed hot from the arc connecting on three 3-pointers. He also pulled down eight rebounds, blocked two shots and had two steals.

But the Mustangs once again received a big lift from freshman Amaechi Chukwu and senior John Weger off of the bench. The two have been instrument helping MSU gain momentum over the last four games.

"We've really started to lock into our roles better," Leslie said. "Amaechi Chukwu and John Weger continue to provide fantastic minutes for us off the bench in different ways. I am very proud of what they have been able to consistently bring."

Chukwu scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting against the Aggies just missing out on his second double-double of the season with nine rebounds. The Denton native has scored in double figures in four of his last five games.

"Meech is going to be a really good player for us over the course of his career," Leslie said. "He is about the process. He had to work on a lot of elements of his game fighting to get back from the knee surgery. Now, he's not thinking about if he is healthy or not, he is coming to play."

Weger scored a pair of buckets on including a 3-pointer in the second half, but deftly aided the Mustangs' attack dealing a career-high 10 assists as MSU outscored the Aggies by 24 points in his 27 minutes of court time.

"John is a smart basketball players and knows where the next rotation is," Leslie said.

Midwestern State shot 50 percent as a team for the third time in the last four games finishing the game at 54.5 percent. The Mustangs also connected on 10 3-pointer and hit double-digit triples in consecutive games for the first time this season.

Junior Terrell Wilson continued a run of four consecutive games in double figures finishing with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He added four rebounds and three assists.
