MSU falls to No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce, 100-68

COMMERCE, Texas -- Midwestern State stuck with No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce through the first half before succumbing to No. 4-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday afternoon at the A&M-C Field House.

Hannah Reynolds led the Mustangs with 14 points and five rebounds. MSU drops to 9-7 on the season and go 3-3 in Lone Star Conference play.


Through the first four minutes, Midwestern State went up 8-6 with four points from four Lion turnovers. Morgan Lenahan posted five points on the first three-pointer on the game.

Asiyha Smith's three-pointer and Dorian Norris' steal started the home side on an 8-0 run that lasted over a minute and a half of play. Norris clinched nine points and two steals on the night.

Shawnisay Millar drained both free-throw attempts to put the Mustangs down by three at 13-16. Soon after, Hannah Reynolds turned in her fourth and six points of the match to gain the one-point lead. MSU found a 6-0 run over two minutes.

Commerce began to struggle with three turnovers in four minutes and a three-minute scoring drought. Chania Wright's first layup ended the streak. The guard was good for 14 tallies and three assists. Smith took another steal and drained both chances from the line to take a 20-17 advantage with less than a minute to play. The starting guard retained 15 points and four rebounds in 28 total minutes.

DesiRay Kernal's steal and score by Dyani Robinson took the Lions into the second quarter at 22-17. The team posted 67 percent shooting from the floor and were 83 percent from the line. Kernal posted 13 points, going five of six from the field, and added six boards. Texas A&M-Commerce recorded seven turnovers, but grabbed nine points from the Mustangs' six giveaways.

MSU was six of 14 from the field and drained all four attempts from the charity stripe. They were able to corral six points from TAMUC's turnovers.

Mandy Withey scored the first second period points for Midwestern State, but Robinson and Kernal kept the Lions at bay with scores of their own. Less than two minutes into the quarter, the home side earned a seven-point lead.

Mayiah Watkins propels MSU to within four with a steal and France King finishing the play with a layup. King collected four points and two assists while Watkins earned one point and two steals. The Lions tallied three turnovers in a minute and a half span.

Laila Lawrence's opening points of the quarter turned things around for the Lions. Midwestern State entered their own drop, not finding a basket for over three straight minutes. TAMUC continued to lead by seven with five minutes until halftime. Lawrence concluded with ten tallies, shooting four of eight from the floor.

Millar registered five points to gather the Mustangs, but the red-hot Lions continued to roll to a 43-32 lead at half. The forward led Midwestern State with nine points in the first half while Robinson's ten points topped TAMUC. Millar finished with 11 points and three rebounds for MSU.

Midwestern State held 44 percent shooting from the field and was 86 percent from the line. The team tallied 11 turnovers and 12 boards. Texas A&M-Commerce shot 15 of 28 from the floor and inked only 69 percent free-throw shooting. The home side posted 13 giveaways and 20 rebounds.

Markayla Johnson drew five points through the first five minutes of the third quarter for Midwestern State. This kept the Mustangs within ten. The guard notched a career-high ten points, hitting two three-pointers in the process.

Norris and Robinson turned the tide for the Lions. They took a 14-0 run with Lawrence adding a free-throw and layup. Jordan Mathis broke the streak with a driving layup with less than two minutes to play.

Texas A&M-Commerce recorded a 29-point quarter to 72-46 score before the final ten minutes. Fouls started to hurt MSU with four of the starters with three fouls or more. Millar and King both collected three while Lenahan and Johnson recorded four.

The Mustangs were held at 31 percent shooting in the third period while the Lions soared at almost 60 percent.

Reynolds scored four quick points in the final quarter of play. The forward was good for 7-of-15 from the field and continued her blocking streak with one stop. Sheridan Bostic turned on in the fourth with nine points, going three of six from behind the arc. This helped the Mustangs notch 22 points – the most of all four quarters on the day.

Shipley led Texas A&M-Commerce with six points in the final period while Russell added five points and three rebounds. Robinson was the leading scorer for the Lions with 22 points, going 10-of-14 from the floor. The guard added six rebounds and five assists.

Midwestern State returns to action on Thursday night with another Lone Star Conference face off. The Mustangs and the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs go head-to-head in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
